First Year of College - DONE!

Hey everyone!

First of all, I would just like to congratulate the Class of 2010 on their Graduation from UC!!!!!! I know for sure that this class will be off to great new opportunities and endeavors. I've been familiar with many of them since they were freshman, watching them succeed on the stage, on the field, and in their academics. They are sure to go a long way, and I wish them the best of luck!

As for me, I can hardly believe that I've finished my first year of college and how quickly this past year has flown by.

For all of you graduates, take my advice and enjoy this summer getting ready for your college experience. And, just like starting your freshman year at UC, make sure you get involved right away. This is the best way to find your niche and definitely make lots of friends.

While there are so many opportunities to get involved in college, I chose some activities that I felt most familiar with and thought this would be the best way to make the transition from UC to Rider. As most of you know, I am a dancer, so I auditioned for

and was accepted onto the Rider Dance Team. I had no idea that this was going to be such a major commitment. Practices began right away in September, many of which were scheduled on Sunday nights from 8:00 pm til midnight!!! However, because I was doing something I love, I never minded the long hours spent, because in the end, performing at all of the Rider home basketball games was so much fun. I had other opportunities to perform on campus too (like at our own Relay for Life) and I have found a great bunch of friends in all of my teammates.

I also joined the News@Rider - Rider's very own t.v. news show. Many of you will remember that I was a part of UCTV, so this, also, was sort of a familiar ground for me. As a freshman, I was given the opportunity to be a co-anchor on a rotating basis, with three other students. It was a great learning experience, and I'm planning on getting even more involved with the news next year. You can check it out at http://comm.rider.edu/RUNetwork/

I was very lucky to have been paired with the perfect roommate :) Jenn and I hit it

off right away. Living with her didn't just make her my "roomie" - it made her one of my best friends. Sadly, Jenn transferred to the University of Miami after the first semester so I was faced with finding another roommate. Again, I was lucky enough to learn that another girl on the dance team needed a roommate too, so we decided to room together. I didn't think it was possible, but I found another "best friend" in Michelle!

Academically, my first year at college was a success. While there's always room for improvement, I think that all things considered, I did pretty well. The most difficult challenge for me during this first year was time management. I no longer had my Mom and Dad looking over my shoulder to make sure that I was studying and doing my homework. I had to make that commitment to myself to put aside a certain amount of time each day to get my work done. It isn't easy, I warn you, because there is so much to do at college. There's always a game to go to, a concert or show to attend, or simply the chance to hang out with your friends. It's very tempting to ignore your school work, but it's definitely to your benefit if you put work first. In the end, that commitment will bring you great rewards!!!

I'm proud to say that after a rigorous application and interview process, I was accepted into the Leadership Development Program beginning with my sophomore year. This program will require me to attend additional classes specifically designed to help students learn and strengthen their leadership skills. I'll have the opportunity to participate in many different activities where I'll be required to take on leadership roles both on campus and in the community. I'm so excited to be a part of this program which, I am sure, will be

of great importance to my future endeavors.

Well, I've given you a glimpse into my first year in college. I'm happy to say that it was a huge success. I'm looking forward to the future, just as all of you are, and I wish for you the same success that I have enjoyed during the past year.

I promise to be back from time to time to fill you in on all my news!!!

College Life!!

Hey everyone!! Remember me?! It's Jeanette, UC '09 graduate, and now a freshman at Rider University. I came back to tell you all about my transition from high school and college and what my life is like now. Feel free to post comments and leave questions for me if you want to!

Making the transition from high school to college was full of different emotions for me. In the summer and throughout the first month here, I was so excited to be heading off to college and gaining independence by living on my own. It didn't hit me until the second month just how much independence, responsibility, and prioritization I needed! I've had alot of fun already and have made some great friends, but at the same time it's been a little difficult trying to get work done when you'd rather hang out with friends who are in the dorm next to you and don't have mom or dad to tell you "no!"

Fortunately, I think that phase was just in the beginning of the semester, since everyone wanted to meet new people and develop their own comfort zone with groups of friends. Now that I'm well into the semester, actually - almost done with it, I've learned that your work always, ALWAYS needs to come first. I really like my classes here at Rider. I take 5 academic classes a week, and 2 dance classes (because I'm minoring in dance). There's also something called Freshman Seminar, which I have once a week. This class is a 10-week program that has really helped freshman adjust to the college atmosphere. There are activities for us to complete and we are given the opportunity to ask any type of questions that we want to.

If you remember me from my old blogs, you'll know that I was very involved in high school. Well, even though I'm not in ten different clubs here, I am a part of two main organizations already. I'm on the Rider Dance Team (which I had to audition for) and I'm working with the News at Rider, a news program on the Rider University Network. These activities are perfect for me because they're both something that I love to do and that I'm very interested in.

So, to sum it up, I think I'm doing really well in college. Yeah, I've had some breakdowns and have gotten stressed at times, but I feel like I was really well prepared. UC taught me alot, and I owe so much to all my teachers, counselors, and administrators there. They instilled morals, proper behavior, study skills, knowledge, and life lessons for me to follow.

I can't wait to return to UC for the Alumni Christmas Mass! It will be great to be back in the "blue crew". Even though I'm a "Rough Rider" now, wearing cranberry and red, I'll never be afraid to show my Viking pride!

Goodbye Summer, Hello College

Hey all!! I haven't blogged since school ended, and to be honest, I've missed it! I loved sharing my life inside and outside of UC with you, so I've come back to share more and talk about my transitioning to college! Yes, just as UC is about to begin another school year, I'm getting ready to begin a new chapter in my life. But before I do, I thought I'd fill you in on what I've been up to since graduation.

The many rainy days in the beginning of the summer didn't keep me from making the most of my last summer before college. I was disappointed that I couldn't go to the beach more often, but my summer was still packed with lots of fun. I've gone to numerous graduation parties and celebrated with friends and family, danced at my final dance recital, performed a community theatre production of Disney's "High School Musical" (I got to spend a little more time as a high school student!), landed a summer job, saw a Met's game at the new Citifield, and spent some time meeting and getting to know my fellow classmates from Rider. At the end of June I spent a weekend at Rider for freshman orientation which was so fun... a little glimpse of what to expect as a new college student!

This is such an exciting, yet anxious time for me - very similar to the feelings I was experiencing when I was about to enter high school! I think this time I'm a bit more nervous, though. I'm moving in on Sunday, and after that - I'll be living on my own! I think being an only child is going to make this even harder for me. I'm no longer going to have mom and dad to rely on for everything!! On another personal level, I definitely think the fact that I've met so many Rider friends already is going to make it a lot easier. I've been talking to my roommate and even though we haven't met in person yet, I think she and I will get along just fine. I also have the comfort in knowing that one of my closest friends is also going to Rider, so I know that I'll always have someone to lean on if I need her. Academically, I really believe that Union Catholic has prepared me well for the challenges that lie ahead. I'm sure that in college I will have to make deadlines for big assignment, write timed essays in classes, and manage my study time with extracurriculars, among other things - just as I learned to do in high school.

I've already said goodbye to a lot of friends and even two of my closest ones as we all head off to college in many different directions. I hope that our friendships stay true over time and distance. It's really not going to be easy for me to leave the comfort of my friends and family, but I know that they'll be there for me whenever I need them. My friends and I are already making plans to get together for our first break, and of course, we'll be back to visit UC often and see what's new and what has stayed the same.

It's pretty weird to think that I'm not going back to UC this week. But in four short years, I can honestly say that it became my second home. I'll leave any newcomers (and even if you're not one) with this thought - enjoy your time at UC. Take advantage of all that it has to offer. Take your school work seriously, but be sure to have fun too. Meet lots of friends, join clubs, play a sport, get involved in as many ways as you can!! High school goes by in a flash, and when it's over you want to look back and say, "those were the best years of my life." Good luck!

Hey everyone!!! Can you believe it? I am no longer a Union Catholic student!!!!!

After 3 years of blogging, I never knew this day would come so fast. I have been telling you all about my life at UC and out of it since my sophomore year... and now my high school days are over!!! However... just because I am out of UC doesn't mean I won't have things to say about it!!

Well, first of all, let me go through my past month at school. Two words - ACTION PACKED!! After my AP Exams, the Relay for Life, and Performing Arts Company Awards, it was Prom Time!! My senior prom was better than I could have ever imagined. Everything was perfect! All seven of my girlfriends got to be together. We all took pictures at one house, were in the same limo, and even got to sit at the same table!! This meant alot to us because last year at junior prom, we were seperated because of who our dates were. We all had such a fun time and danced the night away. My date and I looked great together! :-) I was sooo happy the entire night. It was everything I could have asked for... and more!!! I know I can speak for everyone at prom when I say that too. Everyone looked fabulous and really seemed to have a great time. Even our Assistant and Associate principals got up and showed off their dancing skills in the middle of the dance floor! I cherished every minute at prom because I knew that the end of the night would come too fast. Afterwards, I had a big sleepover at my house! It was so great. Then, the next morning, we left for Wildwood!

The week after prom weekend was our senior exams. I only had to take math, so it wasn't that bad. Then, the following weekend, I travelled to Albany, NY with the Forensics Team for the annual Grand National Tournament!! My partner and I qualified for nationals in Duo Interpretation, along with the senior boy team. Our boy Public Forum debate team made it to nationals as well. Arielle and I advanced to the Octo- (top 48) and Quarter-Final (top 24) Rounds!!!! We later found out that we finished 19th in the country in Duo. We were overjoyed beyond belief!!! We worked soooo hard the entire year... and it really paid off!! Being a 3-time National Tourament qualifier in my 4 years of forensics was quite an accomplishment... and it was awesome to end my high school career with "breaking" at Nationals. I loved doing forensics and I owe so much to my 4 forensics coaches.

The week before graduation was filled with fun activities for the Class of '09. After graduation practice on Tuesday, we went to Six Flags for the last time. Even though it was rainy and cold, my friends and I still managed to have a good time. After graduation practice on Thursday, it was the Senior BBQ and Drive Around!!!! I have been waiting for this event ever since freshman year!! All of the seniors decorate their cars, beep their horns, and drive around the school, while everyone in school watches them through the windows. 4 of my friends came in my car... and it was sooo much fun!! We finally came to the realization that we were spending our last days at Union Catholic.

On Friday, we had our Baccalaureate Mass and Principal's Reception. It was a beautiful night... the IHM Church across the street from UC was packed with friends, family members, and teachers of the Class of '09. A number of seniors also participated in the mass, by alter serving, bringing up the gifts, UC '09 posters, our yearbook, and other things, reading, & singing in the mass. Then, a reception was held by our principal in the cafeteria. Graduation Day was an emotional day for me!! I started crying at 8 o' clock in the morning! As everyone was lining up to walk, I looked around and soaked the moment in. I thought "this is the last time I'm going to be with all of these people at the same time." I couldn't believe that my 4 years at UC were gone. Even though I am SO excited for summer and college, I know that I am really going to miss high school... especially because of my life at Union Catholic High School. This place has become my home... I have laughed, cried, won, and lost at UC. I've made some of the most memorable moments in my life because of the people I have met here and the things that I have done here. I will always cherish my time at UC, and will keep it and the people I've met because of it close to my heart. I hope all of you can soon experience the joy of Union Catholic that I have... don't take anything for granted and remember to live in the moment!! You only go through high school once in your life!

Now, it's time to celebrate :-)

Busy!

Hey all! Well even though I'm going through my last weeks at UC, I still have a bunch going on.

Last Tuesday was a fun filled day, and it went really well. As the captain of Dance Club, I felt great about my last Pep Rally performance!! Even though there were only 5 girls, including myself, in the Dance Club (I don't know how it got so much smaller since the Winter!), we still did a great job and got lots of compliments. Our outfits were adorable, and specially customized by my mom! We dressed up like baseball players and each wore a different color. It was so fun and I had a great time.. I was so proud of the girls because they worked really hard and learned the dances in only a few short weeks.

Then, Tuesday night, I had to get to school by 5:30 for the 5th Annual Mr. UC Pageant!!! Like I said in my last blog, I was an escort because I'm on the Student Council. I had sooo much fun. I've been going to the pageant ever since I was a freshmen - looking up to the seniors and hoping that I would be a part of it in my senior year. Not to mention.... the best part of it was that the contestant that I escorted, Mr. Edison, WON!!! After competing in casual wear, talent, formal wear, and trivia, he was crowned Mr. UC. It was soooo exciting! All of the proceeds from the event are going to the Gresco Children's Trust, the children of one of our teachers, Mr. Gresco, whose wife recently passed away. It was a such a great night... one that I will always remember from my senior year!

Everyone in the senior class is gearing up for the senior prom. Plans for the weekend after prom are being finalized, (or in my case, still being made), hair and make up appointments are being scheduled, and tuxedos are being ordered! I actually went to the tuxedo shop with my date this weekend. It was so exciting because we're both really looking forward to prom!! I think I'm pretty much set, all I have to do is get jewelry and order my date's bouttenier.

This week is a short week of classes for me, because I have to take two AP tests at the end of the week. I have my AP English Literature exam on Thursday, and my AP US History exam on Friday. Even though I'm really not looking forward to them, I get to leave school afterwards, so that's always good! Then, Friday night, I'm going to the Relay for Life with the Student Movement Against Cancer. I'm not sure if you remember but I blogged about this event when I went last year. I'm really looking forward to it, and I'll tell you all about it later! Hope you all have a great day. Bye!!

My College Decision!

Hey Everyone! I can't believe how fast time is flying. Here I am, at the end of April in my senior year. After having a great spring break with my friends, the time has come for me to realize that I am so much closer to moving on my way, out of Union Catholic and onto another chapter of my life!

I have decided to attend Rider University, majoring in Communications (Radio/TV) and minoring in Dance. After a second visit to Rider a couple Saturdays ago, it really made my decision that much harder... I had narrowed my options down to Rider and Montclair. Because I got into the broadcasting program at Montclair, that was definately an asset. The program is fairly competitive, and I had to go to an interview and write an essay to do it. You may be questioning why I decided to attend Rider then! But ultimately, I made my decision based on my overall feel for the college. I feel a comfortable and cool vibe when I go to Rider - everyone there is very nice and helpful. The campus is really nice, and seems more of a college campus than Montclair. Also, Montclair is said to be a "suit case" school, where alot of students commute. I want to be somewhere where I feel a togetherness, and can feel at home. That's why I chose Rider!

I am so excited to be heading towards college. I've already been talking to some incoming freshmen on Facebook by joining the Rider University Class of 2013 group! Some members of the group are actually planning to meet up with each other at Rider in a few weekends, to meet people and get to know each other even before our Orientation Days. One of my best friends, Erin, is also going to Rider so her and I might ride up there together.

Another exciting thing that has happened in my life is that I tried out for Mystic Vision Player's production of High School Musical!!! MVP is Linden's Community Theatre. I was really excited about auditioning because I have never done community theatre before, only shows at UC. I got a callback, and turns out I will be playing the part of a Wildcat Cheerleader!!!!

I'm also really excited for tomorrow... its the Spring Pep Rally and the Mr. UC Pageant!! I'm involved in both. I'll be dancing in the pep rally with the Dance Club, and I will be escorting Mr. Edison at the pageant. If you get a chance, you should really come out and see this event. It's hilarious and really a great time for everyone.

I'll be updating you on other things in the near future. Maybe I'll be seeing some of you at our Open House on Wednesday! Have a good week =)

Death

I bet from the title of this blog post you're all wondering why I would write about something like this. However, death has been an apparent piece of my life at Union Catholic lately...not only have I been learning about death in my Christian Life class, but the UC community has gone through tough times over the past several weeks, as many family members and friends have passed away.

In Religion, the past few chapters we've been studying have had to do with death. At first I thought to myself, "this is so morbid...why am I learning about this?!" But in reality, it has helped me comprehend the process of death, the different ways of handling of it, and understand why death happens. My teacher Sister Irma has really taught us that death is a significant part of life. It comes unexpectedly and affects us forever. There are different stages for those who know death is coming, such as denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and finally, acceptance. The two movies that we are watching in correlation with our study and that demonstrate these stages are "A Shining Season" and "Tuesdays with Morrie."

Several deaths have occurred at UC recently, including the wife of Mr. Gresco, the grandfather of Mr. Luciano, the father of Mrs. Addison, and many grandparents of students. I really believe that the UC community is a great family to be a part of, whether in dealing with successes or with losses. Everyone reaches out to each other and offers their thoughts and prayers. Students and faculty members alike attend funeral services for those who have passed, and really unite together when needed most. As a school, we pray for so many different people everyday. It's not just a habit of ours, it's a constant way of life.

One particular death that has stuck out to me is the recent death of the 17 year old boy from Roselle Park. On Saturday night, only about a half hour later, I drove down the same road that he got into an accident on. "That could have been me," I said to myself. While I am praying for the boy, all those involved, and his family, I am taking this experience and learning from it. Just like Sister Irma is preaching to us, I can't take anything for granted. I have to ask myself, "am I really living my life the way I want to? Have I said the things I have wanted to say to the people in my life?"

Having lost 4 family members as a child, I'm no stranger to death myself. I'm glad that Union Catholic is somewhere for me to share my grief, thoughts, memories, and prayers. I know that whatever I go through, the people at UC will be there for me if I need them!

Crunch Time!

There are only 7 days left until our first performance of "Into the Woods"!!!! I am stressing out so much because this is the time when the play basically becomes MY LIFE. I live and breath the lines and lyrics!!!! The set isn't quite finished yet.... costumes are still being determined, and we haven't even run the full show in one rehearsal yet. Talk about pressure!!

I know we're going to pull it off, because somehow we always do. But this show seems to have crept up on all of us, and I think we all wish we had some more time to prepare. It's an incredibly difficult show to pull off - as our director told us when she announced it in May. I just feel like there's so much to be done! Even my mom is busy preparing for the first show, because she helps with decorating the lobby every year.

Our first performance is for the grammar schools, on Wednesday, March 25. This is always an energizing day, because the kids get so excited to see us perform. It gives us a boost of confidence for our opening night. On Thursday, we perform a section of the show for the student body. This is probably the most nerve-racking show because it's in front of all of our peers that we see everyday. Then we have another grammar school performance the following Wednesday.

I hope you all can come out and enjoy PAC's performances - It runs for five shows on two weekends, The 27th - 29th, and the 3rd - 4th!!! I know you'll be impressed with our professionalism, dedication, and love for the performing arts here at Union Catholic =)

An Incredible Weekend

The 2009 Senior Retreat was held this past weekend, and I am so unbelievably happy that I went. I know I can speak for everyone when I say that I gained a new understanding for not only my faith and my life, but for the Union Catholic Class of '09 too.

We bonded in ways that none of us have ever experienced. We laughed together...we cried together. We shared our personal struggles and experiences, and expressed how much UC has meant to us over these past years. I really didn't want to leave!!!

When we arrived at Camp Warwick, NY on Friday night, we received our room assignments, put our bags away, and gathered together in a common room for a prayer service and some ice breakers. By the time we were finished, it was pretty late... and I had no trouble sleeping that night! Each cabin (one for the boys, two for the girls) had four rooms, and each room slept 10 people. Even though some girls and guys that roomed together may not have been best friends, there was no drama at all for the entire weekend, and people really got to connect with others that they may not have talked to before. This brought our class so much closer together... it was so great!

On Saturday, after breakfast, we got to listen to 7 our of own classmates speak. They each talked about personal experiences throughout high school, especially on how they've changed. It must have been so hard for them to get up in front of their peers... but each person spoke so eloquently. Everyone supported them, too. We participated in some other activities, and got some free time, where some people played basketball, some hung out in their rooms, and some just sat outside and enjoyed the beautiful views. We ate lunch, and then performed skits in different groups. The skits had to portray what each one of us wanted to do with our lives. It was really fun, and alot of the groups were really creative and funny.

Saturday evening was the most powerful part of the entire trip. We celebrated Mass together with Father Joe Mancini, and then it was time for the letters. Members of the Class of '09 were given letters that were written to them from family members, friends, peers, teachers, or anyone else who wanted to say something to them. When each senior received their package of letters, they could go anywhere they chose to read them. Many of the letters held powerful messages, and brought many tears. Afterwards, we gathered together for a candlelight vigil, and to discuss what the letters, and even what the weekend as a whole, had meant to us. During this time, I never felt closer my classmates. Afterwards, we had a big bonfire, where we made s'mores and sang songs. It was sooo much fun!

I hope that when you come to UC and are a senior, you make it a point to attend the Senior Retreat - I am telling you... you will definately not regret it!

Moving Along...

Hey all!! Sorry that I haven't written a blog in awhile, I've been pretty busy! I can't believe that I'm in the 3rd marking period of my senior year. It's been stressful... waiting for college acceptances, trying to keep up grades while doing extracurricular activities, and having problems with relationships and friends. But, I think I'm managing pretty well! I've learned that you gotta make the best out of it - it's my last year at UC so I really just want to enjoy myself and embrace the experiences and people around me.

I've been accepted to 6 colleges so far - Rider, Montclair, Seton Hall, Wilkes, LeMoyne, and Point Park! =) I've also received scholarships to all of these schools. I visited the colleges in New Jersey already, and just recently my parents and I took a 6-hour trip to Point Park University in Pittsburgh. It seemed like a really great school, with a great broadcasting program. (I'm looking to major in broadcast journalism or some other type of communications). Another benefit to the school is that it's in a big city, so there would be plenty of opportunities for interships and jobs. The only thing that I'm not so sure about is that its so far away!!!!! It's something that I really have to think about.

I also visited Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA for the second time. This time I toured the Dance and Theatre Program there, and participated in a scholarship audition. I think it went reeeally well. I felt great to be there. Taking this second look at the school really put it at the top of my list. However, I don't hear if I got accepted or not until March!!!

Well anyway, besides college stuff, things have been going pretty well. I've celebrated 18th birthdays with my friends, gone to a St. Joe's Dance (for the first time, finally!), and made the Honor Roll for the 2nd Marking Period. I'm always happy when I get on the Honor Roll because I get to enjoy a nice reception with breakfast food and drinks in the cafeteria. Parents are invited to attend, too! This year, the school had to have two separate receptions instead of one, because so many students got on the Honor Roll.

So, what else is new? Well the seniors are looking forward to our upcoming Senior Retreat in Warwick, New York. We leave next Friday and come home on Sunday. I don't really know what to expect, but I'm sure I'll have a good time because I really love my class - I think we have alot of spirit and really are a great group of people. I'll be sure to write a blog about it when I get back!

Start of the Second Semester

Woo hoooo! I'm passed the slum of midterm exams! I'm now a second semester senior, and ready to finish my year in a great way. I know that I can't slack off, even though it's the stereotypical attitude for seniors to take. (Ever heard of "senioritis"?) Our teachers and counselors here at UC remind us to keep working hard so that we can prove to colleges that we just didn't care about the rest of our senior year grades.

This week, as many of you may know, is Catholic Schools Week. The theme is "Catholic Schools Celebrate Service." There is something special that goes on at UC for every day of the week. On Monday, a special prayer service was performed on UCTV by members of Peer Ministry, followed by a photo montage of UC students performing service. It was a "thank you" to all of the different clubs and organizations that perform different kinds of services, from the Ambassadors and Big Brothers and Sisters to the student created clubs like S.T.A.N.D. and R.E.A.C.H. Today, the teachers could enjoy a delicious breakfast in the development office. There was also a Club Period today. There will be "breakfast in the wings" for the different classes in the next coming days, as well as TWO tag days! Thursday is a UC Spirit day, and Friday is a sports/college gear day. Like I always say, there's always something going on at UC.

My birthday weekend was probably one of the best I've ever had. I didn't have to worry about homework because the 2nd marking period was over, and I was finished with all of my midterms. I hung out with my friends basically the whole time! I even had sleepovers for three days in a row :-) It was great! My friends and I took a road trip down the shore on Thursday after our morning exam... it was actually a perfect day because it wasn't too cold. We went to my favorite food place down there, Surf Taco! And then went on the beach for a little bit. On Friday we celebrated my birthday by going to the Hard Rock Cafe in New York. We took the train in and just shopped around afterwards - it was really fun! It made me feel independent and mature, something I've wanted for a really long time!

Play practices have started up again for Into the Woods. The acting and choreography is coming together pretty well. I think we're on a good path towards opening night on March 27th! ...Wow, just two months ahead!

Well, it's getting late. I'm going to wear my pajamas inside out and pray for a snow day tomorrow! :-) Talk to you all soon.

New Year, New Memories!

Hey everyone! Happy New Year! I hope you all had a great holiday season, enjoyed the snow, and have started to make some new memories. I know I have!

I have received 2 college acceptances so far... and boy does it feel good. I got into Wilkes University in Pennsylvania, and Rider University in New Jersey. I also got a $12,000 a year scholarship to Rider!! Receiving this news really made my winter break so much better, and settled some of my nerves. At least I know that I got in somewhere!

Let me update you on what has happened here in my life at UC. The Winter Pep Rally went so well! Dance Club did amazing and I was so proud of all of the girls. Since it was right around Christmas time, we opened the dance with "Santa Baby," then threw our hats off and performed to Britney Spears, Rhianna, and Lady GaGa! It was so much fun... I love performing in front of all of the whole school! A lot of people could never do this, but I'm used to it :-) We all got a lot of compliments afterwards, from students to faculty, so that made me feel really happy. I've already started planning for the Spring Pep Rally!

Arielle and I got 2nd at our last Forensics meet, and we have another one on Saturday. We're looking pretty good for Nationals - We are in 2nd place right now, behind our friends Alex and Chris! The top 6 finalists (cumulatively) at the end of the year get to go to Nationals over Memorial Day Weekend. It's always better to be safe than sorry, though, so we're still practicing hard and working to perfect our piece. I'm about to go practice with her and one of our coaches right now!

Everyone has been gearing up for the (dreaded!) Midterm Exams. Luckily though, this week has been going pretty smoothly because my teachers are going over the material and helping us review. We actually have a designated "Study Day" on Thursday, and then exams start on Friday. I haven't had much homework either, which is always a plus. I just have to complete my service project report for the 1st semester, and then I'm off to study-land! Oh, did I mention that my 18th birthday is during the exam week?! I'm so excited! I want to plan a night out with my friends.. it'll be a great way to celebrate not only my birthday but the end of exams!

It's Christmas Time at UC!

Hey everyone! Wow, it's been awhile since I've last talked to you. There's just been so much going on. In this blog I'm going to share with you all of the things (that I can think of!) that go on in UC around the holiday season.

For starters, the 2008 Semi Formal ("A Winter Wonderland") was held on Friday, December 5th. This is always an exciting event for everyone. My girlfriends and I all went together (no dates this year!) and had a great time. We met at my friends house beforehand to take pictures and hurried over to school to dance the night away. We all had a sleepover afterwards to, and chatted about the dance for almost the entire night. To the right is a picture of me and my best friend, Bess Ann. We couldn't believe that we were going to our very last UC Semi!!! I really had a great time. As a member of student council I helped set up the day before. Everything from the auditorium entrance, to the cafeteria, to the gym was beautifully decorated.

The following Tuesday night was the Tree of Lights Ceremony and the Christmas Concert. The Tree of Lights is an annual gathering of UC community members to remember certain people during the holiday season. I have gone to the ceremony in the past, and it was truly wonderful. Our tree in the main foyer is decorated with doves that have names of people to remember. Whether that person has passed away, is sick, or just needs prayers, Union Catholic remembers them. After the ceremony, the concert took place in the auditorium, where members of the Band, Chorus, Gospel Choir, and Dance Class performed.

My religion teacher, Sister Irma, has been reminding her students and asking them for donations because she is collecting money to buy coats for poor children. Some members of the senior class have even donated their own coats. In Mr. Wright's classes, students are writing Christmas cards for soldiers in Iraq. There is also a Toy Drive going on too!

Student Council had their own Secret Santa exchange today, and a small party during homeroom. Mrs. Leegan, our moderator, wanted to thank us for all of the hardwork we've done so far this year. The "Deck the Halls" festivities have ended now... (the senior hallway is by far THE BEST!) We strung lights all the way down the hall, and made stockings for every single person and put them on their lockers! It was alot of work but people were always eager to stay after school and help.

I almost forgot something! The Senior Tree Trimming Party! The Christmas Tree that is displayed in the cafeteria is customarily the Senior Tree. Every senior who comes to the party makes their own ornament and gets to hang it on the tree. We sing Christmas carols, eat, play games, and enjoy everyone's company. Sister Percylee blesses the tree and then the tree is lit for all to see! It was a really fun night. As you can see, UC really does embrace the Christmas spirit, in many different ways. This week is the last week of school before our VERY LONG Christmas Vacation!!!! Everyone is so excited... we don't have to come back to school until January 5th! Thursday is the Winter Pep Rally, which Dance Club has been preparing for. Then on Friday we have a half day, and also the annual Christmas Alumni Mass. On Saturday there is a Forensics Competition for our league... I hope we do well because we all need to get points to go to Nationals! (Speaking of Forensics, we had another invitational meet on Saturday, and were very successful! I personally received 2nd Place in both categories of Declamation and Dramatic Pairs).

COLLEGE

The stress is building! I had to sacrifice some nights out over the weekend to really focus on my college applications. Thank goodness I took the time to do this, because if i didn't I could be really behind!! Many students already have all of their college applications done, while I'm still deciding what schools to apply to! But I know that some students are even farther behind than I am, too.I sent in 3 applications this weekend - Hofstra, Muhlenberg, and Rider. I applied to all of them online, which is the common way to do things now. The next step was handing in transcript order forms to Guidance. The Guidance Office is so helpful and organized with all of these things... I'm really thankful for my counselor, Mrs. Jakubik, and the guidance secretary, Mrs. McKenna. I met with Mrs. Jakubik last week so that she could really get me going on handing in my applications. We talked about the schools I want to apply to, using the Common Application online, and the whole process. After my meeting, it made me really decide to sacrifice a night with my friends for getting ready for my future!

I still have more colleges to apply to, but the fact that 3 applications are on their way really relieves some of my anxiety. Each night from now on my mom and I will work on a little more, and I'll be sure to be done by the end of the month!

Aside from college, practices for Into the Woods have gone underway, with the first big rehearsal including the full cast on Saturday. I was there from 12-3, learning the music for opening number.

I've also been practicing forensics for the St. Joseph's Villiger Tournament in Philly. The team is going to leave after school on Friday and come home on Sunday. The competition takes place on Saturday. I'll tell you all about it in my next blog!

UC Forensics Continues the Tradition of Excellence!!

On Saturday, I competed in my first forensics tournament of this year! It was the second meet of the Newark Catholic Forensics League. (Sadly I had to miss the first one due to a prior commitment). This means that there are 4 more competitions, once every month. After the results of all of the meets are combined, we know who has qualified for Nationals - which are always over Memorial Day Weekend, and will be in Albany this year. Anyway, down to the competition! It was held at Montville Township High School, so the team of about 16 traveled together in the UC Van, with some of the judges going in their cars. As always, the team met in one of the classrooms before the competition started to come together in pep and prayer! We all link hands in a circle and go around saying what we want to prayer for, and then together say the Our Father..... then we bang on the desks and chairs in a wild uproar, getting pumped to have fun and do our best!!!

And that is just what we did. We had many wins in many different categories. My partner and I got 2nd in Duo Interpretation, and our senior boy team got 4th in Duo. Then, our boys public forum debate team got 2nd, and a sophomore competing in Student Congress got 3rd. Two freshman girls won trophies also - one got 4th place in Declamation, and the other got 6th place in JV Oral Interpretation (Reading). Finally, a senior boy got 6th in Drama. Because our team received so many points, Union Catholic was ranked as 3rd at the competition! Everyone was so excited, and I could tell our coaches were really proud of us. The day before my partner and I spent 3 hours working on our piece, so it felt great to be rewarded for that. However, we're eager to practice some more and really perfect the little things. As you can tell, we're really serious about forensics, but we also have a bunch of fun too. There's often a lot of free time at competitions and at away tournaments, so everyone really bonds and shares a lot of laughs. Forensics has to be one of the funnest activities that I do! =)

I just came home from the first rehearsal for the Spring Musical, Into the Woods. We got a lot of paperwork from Mrs. Carolan, explaining the Company's policy and information. Then we started the "read through" of the script! Just by the first practice, everyone can tell that this show is going to be very challenging, but also really enjoyable at the same time.

Dance Club, Halloween, & A 3-Day School Week!

Hey all! Hope everyone out there is doing well. Naturally, I've had a lot of things going on, so let me tell you all about them!!

Just a recap from my last blog - the Fall Pep Rally was awesome!! It was our first pep rally as seniors - and of course, we really showed our class pride. The night before my friends and I made our own shirts with "09" on the back so that we could arrive at the pep rally in style! Two members of the senior class acted as the MC's, and they got everyone's school spirit up. We had a dj and everything! We started by saluting the flag while listening to a sophomore sing the Star-Spangled Banner, then it was time to see the Varsity teams "walk." This means that they walk down the middle of the gym floor through two rows of the cheerleaders so that the spotlight is on them. After, the gymmastics team performed together, with two soloists doing their floor routines at the end. Then, there was a soccer kick-ups challenge for anyone who wanted to compete. After that there was the volleyball challenge between the classes - the winner (the seniors, of course) had to play against the teacher team!! The picture to the left is the senior boys coming together before they played the teachers.

This year, because I'm a senior and have been involved with it all 4 years, I am one of the leaders of the Dance Club. We had our first two practices last week, and they went really well!! I'm so excited to work with the girls and choreograph the dance for the Winter Pep Rally. Dance Club is open to anyone - there are no auditions and no experience needed! We welcome everyone who just wants to dance. So, now that's another thing that I'm adding to my schedule!!

Halloween at UC on Friday was fun too, as always! Everyone is so enthusiastic - even our principal dressed up! My friends and I were jungle animals - we called ourselves "Jungle Fever" and carried around a first aid kit, hot water bottle, and bottles of tylenol!! We were hoping to win the group contest, but sadly lost to the senior boys who dressed up as the Village People. My friends and I had a fun weekend together - I didn't have any homework because it was the end of the marking period so I could just enjoy myself!! It felt good =) I also visited Rider University on Saturday for an info session and tour. My visit proved to be a positive one, because it enforced my decision to apply there.

This week we have 3 days of school. Since tomorrow is election day, and Friday is the Co-op Test, there's no school for us! Our Fall Play, Incorruptible is also playing this weekend - just two days - Friday and Saturday nights at 8:00 p.m.! You should come and see it! Then on Saturday I have a Forensics competition. I'm competing in duo with a junior girl - we're really working hard tis week to get our piece as close to perfection as possible.

Good Luck to all of you who are taking the Co-op!!! If you're stressing out about it - don't. It's not that hard, and I know that whatever score you get, there will be a high school that will welcome you and be the right fit!

Junior/Senior Trip!

Wow, what a great weekend! No one wanted to come home on Sunday or go back to school on Monday - everyone had such a good time together during the 4 day trip to Plymouth Meeting, Lancaster, Philadelphia, and Villanova.

Close to 200 juniors, seniors, and faculty were served pizza before we departed UC after our half-day on Thursday. Taking only 2 hours to get there, we were able to check into our hotel rooms and chill out until our dinner cruise on the Spirit of Philadelphia! The cruise was sooooo nice.. there was a DJ, buffet, and a beautiful city skyline to enjoy! We all got to go onto the top deck and take pictures and view the sites. The night was full of great music and fun dancing - it was sad at it had to end so soon! But we all knew there was alot more fun to await us.

We got some free time afterwards to hang out, but not for too long - because our curfew for every night was 12 AM sharp! The floor supervisors came around to check that everyone who belonged in the room was there. On Friday, we had to get up early for breakfast and depart for Lancaster - the Amish country. During the day we saw an informational video and went on a guided bus tour of the country. Lots of cows and open land - let me tell you! Alot of people thought that this part was boring, and some tried to fall asleep. But I didn't think it was that bad. I liked how we stopped at a few little shops and farms to see how the Amish and Mennonites really live. That night we went to Hershey Park in the Dark! I've never been to Hershey before, so it was really fun for me. One of my friends doesn't like roller coasters so we took turns sitting out with her. At the end of the night we went to the Chocolate Factory and I bought a pack of Twizzlers for my parents!

The next day we were in Philly. We took tours of the Edgar Allan Poe House, the National Constitution Center, Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, and Congress Hall. Then... at night (I think this was my favorite part!) we went to the Eastern State Penitentiary for the Terror Behind the Walls!! I see that sophomore blogger Megan went there and told you about her experience. I get scared sooo easily... but at the same time, I love being scared! So this was really fun for me. I walked with a big group, including Mrs. Thornton and Mr. Reagan!!! I never knew that Mr. Reagan was such a scary cat - it was so funny to watch him go through that haunted maze! Thank goodness one of my guy friends was there with me - he was the leader of the group, but made it really fun because he would make jokes and actually talk to the people who were scaring us. My heart was pounding so fast by the time we got out!!

Then on the last day, we visited Villanova University for 10:30 Mass and a tour. The campus was beautiful, and everyone there welcomed Union Catholic, so it was really nice. I had such a good time on the trip because I was able to bond with my friends, and even with classmates that I'm not that close with. I could put off school work for the majority of the weekend and just relax and enjoy the good times!!!

We have a fun filled week here at UC. Tuesday is our Fall Pep Rally (including a free blue and white tag day), Wednesday is a Club Period and Freshman Class Elections, and Friday is a regular tag day!! Woooo, do I love being a Viking.

Busy, Busy, Busy!

As always, I have lots to tell you! October is such a fun-packed month. Last week, the seniors had their Day of Recollection. I had such a good time! We went to St. Joseph's Shrine to gather together in prayer, friendship, and memories. We didn't get back to school until around 5 o'clock. The peer ministry counselors who coordinated the day for us told us that it was our first "last" gathering together as the UC Class of '09! It was exciting but really sentimental at the same time. There were different group activities and discussions for us, as well as free time to spend with our fellow classmates.

Then on Thursday night, as one of my most important ambassador duties, I gave tours and welcomed students and families into UC for our Fall Open House. The school was packed!! It was great to talk to different kids and their families, and to show them what UC is all about. I had the busiest weekend too!! I had to work Friday and Saturday night until 11... I had to take the SAT's on Saturday morning...AND I performed with some past UC Alumni for this dance event in Hamilton, NJ at the Grounds for Sculpture. It was an interesting experience, and I'm really glad that the choreographer asked me to join her with 2 others to perform a modern dance that was site-specific.

We had a Pink and White Tag Day this week to honor and remember those with cancer. Little pink pins were also sold during lunch. Progress reports are going out, so that might be a wake up call to some people! Or, to others, it will reassure them they they're doing good, and encourage them to keep up the good work. I think I've been doing pretty alright... but there's always room for improvement. We'll see how I do!

I think the biggest event for me right now is that the spring musical auditions are on Friday!!!!!! You don't know how nervous I am..... I'll save the "PAC talk" for my next blog though. There's so much going on to look forward to - like college visits, the Junior/Senior Trip to Philly, and the Fall Pep Rally!! I just can't wait.

Time Flies

I can't believe it's the end of September already! Where did this month go?! It's funny, because when everyone's in school, they say the actual school days go by soooo slow... ("It's only third period?!?!") But to me, the weeks are flying by! I guess it's because I never have a dull moment now. I'm always busy with some thing or another!

Last week, like I had said, were the 8th Grade Days of Recollection. I was one of the leaders for Sacred Heart. (here's a shout out to all my new Sacred Heart friends! haha). I was also one of the four senior speakers - I wrote a speech about having a relationship with God. The other speeches/areas we talked about that day were decision making, friendship, and self-acceptance. I think the day overall went well - it's great to connect with the 8th graders and talk to them about what the high school life is like.

Hmmmm, what else... Oh! Did I ever mention that I've been taking voice lessons? I started a few weeks ago because I want to prepare for the spring musical auditions. (Yes, already!). The auditions are next Friday - October 10th. I can't believe it's so early!! Well, actually, I can - Since we're doing Into the Woods this year, I know we're going to need ALOT of preparation! Since I didn't make the fall play, I really really hope to get a part in the musical. I've been in the musical all three years so far... it's just what I love to do! I've been really thinking about what song I'm going to sing. It's gotta be the perfect fit for me!

The dance last Friday was really fun. I was surprised to see how many people were there! Sometimes alot of the upperclassmen don't go, but not my class! We wanted to show our school spirit, because it's the last Welcome Back Dance we'll ever get to go to. It was so hot in there, but we all danced the night away. My friends and I were really tired, but still managed to go to the diner afterwards for a quick bite to eat. It's our senior year - we gotta make all the memories we can!!

Another Busy Week!

Hey all! Hope everyone had a good week and weekend. Let me tell you all about mine!

I'll start with call-backs for the Fall Play. There were 18 people there, so that meant that 10 people had to be cut. In variations, we had to perform different scenes with different people. I was asked to read for 2 of the 3 female parts. Even though I was nervous before we started, when I got up onto the stage and started the scene, I was comfortable. I knew that I did the best I could and gave it all I got. We were done around 4:30 p.m., and then had to endure the dreaded wait until the list was put up on Mrs. Addison's school notes page! Finally, at around 10, after refreshing the page about a thousand times, the list was up!!!!! I scrolled down, and didn't see my name.......I didn't get a part! I was really upset and started to cry... but that night and the day after, alot of my friends comforted me, and said they were really surprised. That made me feel better. I was also okay because I didn't feel like I could have tried harder, or done better. I did my thing, and it just didn't work out. It's ok!!!! I know that I'm going to be really busy anyway, especially since it's the college search & application season. I really really would have loved to be in the play, but I just have to remind myself that things happen for reasons, and focus my time on other things... like school work and college!

Speaking of that, one night last week the guidance department hosted a College Info Night for seniors and their guardians. It's always helpful to go to these because you learn exactly what you have to prepare for your applications and at what times certain paperworks have to go out. I'm in the process of writing my college essay and deciding what schools I am going to apply to, and when.

Two other senior girls and I have been meeting with an SAT math tutor every week since the summer. We get to work in guidance for an hour after school, where it's quiet and air conditioned! There's only two more sessions because the SAT is October 4th. After meeting with my tutor for so long, I think I'm actually going to go into the test more comfortable than I've ever been! I'm hoping to boost my math score up another 50-100 points. We'll see how that goes!

As for this week, UC is holding two 8th Grade Days of Recollection. I'll be helping and speaking at the one that's tomorrow. I worked it last year too, and it was really fun. I'll be sure to tell you how it goes! Then, on Friday, it's the annual Welcome Back Dance!!!! My friends and I are really excited... it's our last one, so we're gonna go and try to have as much fun as possible. As a newly elected student council homeroom rep, I'll be helping to sell tickets for it before school too.

Back to School!

HEY EVERYONE!! It's me, Jeanette! Your senior blogger =)!!

I can't believe this is my third year blogging and keeping you updated about my life, in UC and out of it! As I enter my senior year, I know I'll have lots and lots to talk about. If you keep reading, you may feel like you know everything about me! I'm really excited for everything that has been, and will be, going on.

Well, everyone got through their first full week of school! As much as I didn't want summer to end, it was good to get back and see everyone. All I have to do is get through this last year, and I'll be all set for college!!! My initial feeling when I think about that is excitement, but as I think about it more and more, it's actually really scary!! I spent some of my summer researching, e-mailing, and visiting colleges. It was important to start the college search early, because even though school just started, I'm really busy already! There are also alot of people at UC who will help you with stuff for college. Our guidance counselors are awesome, always there to give you advice, hold information sessions, and help you in any way. This year, my English teacher is also going to be helping us with the application process - especially with our college essays. So, it takes a little stress off of my shoulders, and reminds me that there is always someone there to help!

Auditions for the fall play, "Incorruptible," were on Thursday. Call-Backs are today! (Monday). The play only has 8 people in the cast - 5 males and 3 females. I got a call-back, but I'm really really nervous, even though I've been doing this for a while! I really want to get a good part, because this is my senior year and everything! I'll be sure to tell you how it goes =).

What's Up!

Hey everyone!! It feels great to still be able to talk to you all and fill you in on my summer. Since my last blog, alot has been going on. I had my graduation picture retakes, I got a job, I visited another college, and more! (Besides having lots of fun in the sun =])

I was reallly nervous about my graduation pictures, because I HATED the way my first set came out. I looked too pale.. and my hair was all over the place! I'm glad that I got to retake them, because I look tanner and my hair grew longer. I also FINALLY got a summer job!!! Believe it or not, this is my first job ever. I've always been too busy with all my extra curriculars to make time for making money! Haha. I work in the mall =] I had my first day this week... it was a little overwhelming, but really fun too. My dance recital was at the end of June. It was really emotional because it was my best friend's last recital. I've been dancing with her my whole life! She graduated from UC this year, and is going to Fordham University. Speaking of Fordham, I just went there for a college visit yesterday! I absolutely loved it. It's right in the heart of New York City. I was so impressed with it.. it was very clean, and the dorm rooms were awesome!! My visit definately put Fordham on the top of my list. That just shows how you really need to come and see the school, and see if you can picture yourself there... just like when you visited UC for open houses, freshman-for-a-days, and more!!

I guess that's all I have for today. I could write more but I need to go catch up on my summer reading!!! I've got to read three books for English 4AP next year, and I'm only on my first one.

IT'S SUMMMER!!!!!!!

At 9:45am last Thursday, I could finally say that it was summer and that I am no longer a junior at Union Catholic!!! What a relief. My two exams were pretty tough, but not as tough as I thought they were going to be. After each one was over, my friends and I went out to breakfast. We're all so excited to be able to take trips to the beach, Six Flags, and more! This summer should be a blast, because (almost) everyone will be able to drive.

I have yet to receive my report card... I'm a little nervous about that, since its the last one and all! But I think out of all the marking periods, the last one was the easiest for me, so we'll see how I do!

I'll be taking an Acting class from the PAC Summer Workshop, starting next week. Mrs. Carolan is going to be teaching it. It will be 5 sessions, with a showcase for family and friends after the 5th one. This will be my third summer taking it. I like it because it keeps me involved with PAC all year!

This summer I will also be taking some time to visit colleges. I already have one visit booked for Monday - I'm visiting the University of the Arts in Pennsylvania! I'm really excited for that.

So, it's going to be a busy summer. (I'm also going on a cruise in July!!) But I think its good because it will keep me busy. I'd rather have stuff to do than just sit around and be bored all the time!

I'll try to keep you updated of my activities and events. Hey, I might even see some of you on Thursday! I have Ambassador and Big Brother/Big Sister meetings and trainings, and then the Class of 2012 BBQ! Hope you have fun - make sure to get screen names and numbers from your fellow classmates - it's a great way to make friends before you even start high school!

Junior Rite of Passage!

On a not-so-sunny morning yesterday, the Juniors were granted their Rite of Passage! This is the day that all juniors eagerly wait for. We got to dress up, which is always a plus! Everyone looked so summery and nice, despite the rainy weather we had! It was really a bummer, because we couldn't get to go out into the Senior Courtyard after the ceremony and breakfast :( Nevertheless, it was still an exciting morning. The junior class gathered in the auditorium during homeroom. Mr. Reagan asked me if I wanted to read for a part of the ceremony, and of course I gladly said yes! Our new student council executive board members for next year (president, vice president, secretary, and media coordinator) read the intentions, and I read the reading.

Mr. Reagan and Sister Percylee both said a few words to us. They talked about how this day isn't just about receiving our right to hang out and eat in the Senior Courtyard - it's about owning up to our responsibilities as the new leaders of the school! I just looked "rite of passage" up in the dictionary - and it says "an event or act that marks a significant transition in a human life." This is a huge transition for me. I can't believe that I will be entering my fourth and final year of high school! Even though these last few days of school seem to be going by slowly, as I look back - high school has gone by so fast!

After the ceremony/prayer service, we all headed into the cafeteria for an AMAZING breakfast!!!! Wow, it was so good. We had french toast, eggs, bacon, sausage, tater tots, and bagels! You could feel the excitement of everyone in the room. We took pictures, talked, and laughed with our fellow members of the Senior Class of '09!!!

Forensics Nationals in Wisconsin!

I'm sitting here in school on this hot and humid day back from our four day weekend! Even though I had a great time at Nationals, it's good to be back at UC, ready to finish up the year :-)

5 members of our Forensics Team (including myself), 3 of our 4 coaches, the mom of one of our coaches, and 2 of our Alumni (who won 7th in the nation last year), all headed to Appleton, Wisconsin on Friday for the Grand National Tournament of the National Catholic Forensics League! Myself and my partner, Chris, competed in Duo Interpretation with our piece "Wrong for Each Other," by Norm Foster. Arielle, sophomore competed in Declamation with the speech entited "A Whisper of AIDS," by Mary Fischer, and two senior boys, James and Keith, competed in Public Forum, a two on two debate about an important topic which they have had time to research and develop both affirmative and negative arguments.

We met at Union Catholic at 7:30am on Friday, and drove together in a van to the airport. After arriving at the Milwauki airport after a 2 hour plane ride, we drove another 2 hours into Appleton. We rode in this comfy and spacious mini-bus, it was cool! We stayed at the Comfort Suites... and boy, was it comforting! Arielle and I shared a room, with 2 TV's, a kitchen area, and a really nice bathroom with a whirlpool bathtub! We had the rest of the day to chill out and relax before dinner and practicing. The hotel had a big pool, hot tub, and sauna... it was heaven! When the time came we all walked over to the Golden Corral, a buffet styled dinner. That night we practiced with our coaches and went over the itinerary for the weekend.

I absolutely love the Forensics Team in general. The coaches are so great - they are always there for you, and they look out for you. The members of the team bond in many ways. I can honestly call these people my "forensics family!" Every one of them has helped me succeed in more ways than one. Not only have my coaches helped me with my speaking, acting, interpretations, and movements... they've helped me to come out of my shell. I was a really shy freshman, but being part of something like Forensics has helped me open up to people and express my feelings more clearly. I just love it!

Even though no one from our team advanced, we all had a great time together. It was definately an experience in and out itself to make it to Nationals. Now I already have to start thinking about what I will do for my senior year!

So, there's only two more weeks of school, and then finals. If all goes well, I'll only have to take 2 finals - Algebra and Spanish (not my favorites...haha).

PAC AWARDS & RELAY FOR LIFE!

Last Friday was an exciting night for me. The annual Performing Arts Company Awards were held at 7:00pm in the auditorium. It was a dress up occasion, attended by the members of PAC this year, their friends, and families. It was hosted by Mrs. Carolan, Mr. and Mrs. Addison, Mrs. Eger, and the 2008 Executive Board. Awards were given to members of the Fall Play and Spring Musical such as Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Featured Performance, Best Performance, Outstanding Chorus Member, Outstanding Ensemble Member, and Best New Member! It was very exciting. I got an Outstanding Ensemble Member award for my performance in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat! I was really happy. Also, the International Thespian Society Awards were given out. UCPAC is Thespian Troup #3673. Thespians are inducted into the society each year based on a point system. If you take dance, singing, or acting lessons…if you see professional shows…if you perform in shows…if you do forensics…if you do tech crew… all of these things come into play and can induct you into the society. Stars and Honor Bars are awarded based on how many hours of service you have done. 1 Star is equivalent to 20 points, or 200 hours. 2 Stars is 300 hours, 3 Stars is 400 hours, and 4 Stars is 500 hours. One Honor Bar is equivalent to 600+ hours. However, with the dedication of many of today’s young actors and actresses, more awards had to be given. On Friday I received a Double Honor Bar Award!! I received one Honor Bar freshman year, but I wasn’t yet eligible for another one because I hadn’t racked up enough points. Besides all of that excitement…PAC Awards is always the time when the shows for next year are announced!! For the fall play we will be doing Incorruptible and for the Spring Musical we will be doing Into the Woods. Mrs. Carolan informed us that everyone has to start working very hard because Into the Woods is the most difficult show that she has ever attempted!! “OH GREAT,” I said to myself! Haha!

After PAC Awards, me and a lot of the other kids headed over to Scotch Plains/Fanwood High School for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Union Catholic SMAC helped students sign up for the event, and UC was one of the biggest groups there! Everyone who wanted to go had to raise $100. We all had matching T-shirts that said “UC Love” on them, and the name “Chris” with a heart around it. This was in remembrance of Chris O’Bara, a student of ours who died from cancer in the beginning of his junior year last year. I also drew hearts with the names of those close to me who have died from cancer. This was my first time attending the Relay, and I am so happy I did. In case you don’t know the whole point of the Relay for Life, there are a number of teams there, and someone from your team should be walking the entire time, from 7pm to 7am. It was really fun to spend time with kids from school and to meet other people, and it was also very emotional. At the luminaria ceremony, everyone who was there gathered in the gym. One of the women who was running it got up and said, “I want all those who have lost their children to cancer to please stand.” A few people stood up. Then she said, “those who have lost their mother or father….those who have lost their grandmother, or grandfather… a sister, or a brother….a dear friend.” More and more people stood up until the whole gym was standing. She then said, “Our goal is that one day, all of us can sit together.” Then, the presentation of the names of all of those who have survived cancer graced two big screens, and then the list of names of all of those who have died was shown. Songs like “Seasons of Love,” “Blackbird,” and “You’ll be in my Heart” played. I was crying hysterically… it was so sad. And yet, it was so powerful because everyone comforted one another. We were all there together for a purpose – to fight cancer and remember all those affected by it. Afterwards, everyone there took one lap around the school in silence together. I’ll never forget that night… and I hope that I will be able to go to it every year from now on.

My class’s academic awards are tonight, and I take my AP English Language & Composition Exam tomorrow. Wish me luck!! I’ll talk to you soon J

Junior Prom!

Well, here I am! I find myself back in school after an amazing night at my Junior Prom, a fun day with my friends on Saturday, and my first AP Exam out of the way!

It was great to have both Thursday and Friday off last week. It gave me time to relax and prepare for the prom! I got my nails done on Thursday and my hair done on Friday. When I woke up in the morning on Friday I was SOOO happy and excited. (for once I actually enjoyed getting out of bed and getting started on my day!) I was out and about... running from the tanning salon to the hair salon, and then picking up my date's boutonniere. It was fun to find out that three of my friends from school were getting their hair done at the same place and time as me! We were all excited and talked about where we were headed to next.

By the time I had finished all of my preparations and grabbed a quick bite to eat, it was time to get dressed and do my makeup! A few family members and friends came over the house to see me before I left for the pre-prom festivities :-)

My parents drove me to my friend Christina's house, where we took pictures with a few of our friends. Then we headed to Gina's, where the limo picked us up! It was so fun to take pictures and see everyone dressed up... ever since I was younger I dreamed of the day when I would be one of the older girls, all dressed up and with a boyfriend for a date!

When our limo arrived at the Berkely Plaza, we were greeted by Mr. Luciano, Mr. Reagan, Ms. Piasecki, and Mr. McCoid. Angelo and I got our pictures taken, and then I got to mingle and take pictures with more people! The room was decorated beautifully, and the food buffet was really good. When the night was over, no one wanted to leave!

Even though the weather was pretty bad, I went down the shore with my friends for a little while. It was great to celebrate our prom together and just enjoy each other's company. As I look back, I couldn't have asked for a better time.

Yesterday I took my AP Government and Politics Exam. It was from about 8 to 11. I'm just glad to get that over...phew! Afterwards some of my friends and I went out to Qdoba to celebrate Cinco de Mayo! :-)

I have some more things coming up... the PAC Awards are on Friday night, as well as the Relay for Life at Scotch Plains/Fanwood High School! The UC Smac (Student Movement Against Cancer) helps to organize students to sign up and go. I'll tell you more about it in my next blog! As for next week, the Juniors and Seniors have their Academic Awards Ceremony on Tuesday night. My last AP Exam (English Language) is on Wednesday, and the Senior Prom is next Thursday! It's never a dull moment here at UC.

Alot to Look Forward To... (PROM!)

As exciting as it is to think about college, there is still alot to look forward to here at UC!

The Junior Prom is now only 14 DAYS AWAY!!! It’s on Friday, May 2nd at the Berkeley Plaza in Berkeley Heights. Plans are already set for pre-prom activities! We’ve rented our limo, and we’ve decided whose house we’ll start the night off at for pictures. My friend, Jenna, created a facebook page for all of the girls to post pictures of our dresses, since we’re trying to avoid having the same dress as someone else!! I thought that was such a good idea.

Everyone is really excited for prom and so happy that it's almost here... BUT, that means that AP Exams are that much closer too! The exams are the two weeks after prom. Alot of people stress out about them, but the good thing to know is that after they're over, we don't have to worry about studying for them anymore!

I've had a fun week this week... On Wednesday night I went to the SMAC Quarters for Cancer Dinner, followed by the Mr. UC Pageant!! It was a blast, as always. Then on Thursday I went with my spanish teacher, Senora McHugh, and the 3Accelerated and 4AP classes to see a cultural Spanish show and then to a Spanish restaurant. And finally, tonight, I get to work the Class of '12 LOCK-IN!!!!

I'm looking forward to a beautiful weekend. I love this weather! I think when I get home I'll work on my tan for prom =) Talk to you soon!

The Final Stretch

Wow, I can’t believe that I started my last marking period of junior year last week! Usually I would say that the year has flown by, once again… but I actually think that the year went by at a normal pace for me. I guess that’s due to all of the different things that have been going on in my personal life. I’ve had to deal with a lot this year… from losing closer friendships to gaining new ones… from experiencing peer pressure to being at war with my mom! All of it has really taken a toll on me, and at times I didn’t think summer could come sooner. But I can’t let all of the drama get to me, because when I look back at high school, I don’t want that to be the biggest part. There's so many more great times to remember! It's great to know that at school, you can always have someone to talk to. Whether it be a guidance counselor, upper classmen, or favorite teacher -- someone is always there! Through all of my experiences, I’ve learned a lot about high school, life, and myself. I guess that's why they say that high school is one of the greatest times of your life!! It's a roller coaster ride, but every minute of it is worth it, because you gain soooo sooo much.

One of the things that I've recently learned is that I really need to get a move on thinking about what I want to do with my future. I really have to focus on my grades... even though its the last marking period, I can't slack off!!!! UC held a College Information Night a couple of weeks ago, and I went with my mom. An admissions representative from Rider was there and explained all about the college application process, and about what colleges look for from high school students. It was really helpful, and it made me want to start searching for the perfect college! Shortly after that, I had a meeting with my parents and my guidance counselor, which gave me a list of colleges that would be fitting for what I want to do. I'm leaning towards studying Musical Theatre as a minor, and possibly Broadcast Journalism/Communications for a major. Those are all my thoughts for now. I’ll be trying to blog more often now, so keep posted for more!!

A Much Needed Update!!

Wow, I haven’t blogged in almost a month! Sorry to keep you waiting - I’ve just been so busy these days! Here I’ll talk about the Spring Musical, Course Selections, Forensics, and Spring Break! It’s rather long, but I hope you read to the end!

Just Amazing…Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, that is! After months upon months of rehearsals, it was finally our time to shine. You could feel the excitement in the air as we all started to arrive at school on opening night. The anticipation of opening night is a feeling you just can’t describe – nervousness, anxiousness, excitement – you name it! Will we pull it off? Will the audience like it? Will everything go as planned? These are all things that run through my mind. But as soon as I set foot onstage, those worries fade away, because being on stage performing is something that I absolutely love! Anyone who had the chance to see the show was treated to an AMAZING performance. I am so proud of all of my fellow cast members and the tech crew who worked tirelessly over the past months. And I am most thankful to Mrs. Carolan, Mrs. Eger, Mr. Addison, and Mr. Rothweiler for all of their support and encouragement in making this show the success that it is. I really hope you got to see the show, and I hope you enjoyed watching it as much as I enjoyed performing in it!

Well, we’ve already been advised to choose our courses for next year. I’m a little behind on that – I’ve just been so busy that I haven’t had the time to sit down with my guidance counselor, or even my mom, to discuss what classes I should take in senior year! It’s hard to believe that I should even be thinking about that right now, but my last year of high school really is just around the corner!! Advice that we’ve been given from Mrs. McCoid, one of our vice principals, is not to choose “easy” classes next year. Colleges want to see that we’re still challenging ourselves, even in our last year. I applied to be in the Yearbook class, and I just found out that I got in, so I was happy about that. Yearbook will be one of my non “core” classes, but I’m sure I’ll have fun putting together the yearbook for my senior year! Other academic classes that I know I will definitely be taking next year are Christian Life, English 4AP, and Analysis Honors (math). That’s 4 down…I need to choose 3 more!

The Forensics “season” ended for some on Saturday with our sixth and last league competition. It was held here at UC, so I was really comfortable and hoped it would help my performance. I guess it did, because Chris and I placed 3rd! A few other team members also placed. Because of our standings throughout the year (2nd, 2nd, 5th, and 3rd), we were able to rack up enough points to send us to Nationals – in Appleton, Wisconsin!!!! I am SO excited. The senior boys debate team (James Trollo and Keith Zuchowski) also made it to Nationals, as well as 2 sophomore girls who compete in Declamation (Ally D’Aluisio and Arielle Gonzales). They’ll be held on Memorial Day Weekend – Don’t worry, I’ll tell you all about it! As a team, Union Catholic received 4th place for both Saturday’s competition (which had 18 schools competing), and 4th for our performance over the year. We’re just continuing the tradition of excellence here at UC!

If you’re reading my blog, I assume you must be reading the other blogs posted by Mrs. Thornton, Mr. Luciano, and the sophomore and freshmen bloggers. I couldn’t help but notice the sophomore’s recent blog about relationships. First of all, I give him a lot of credit for talking about something so personal. But it’s true. High school is a place where you really begin to form relationships that could potentially last a lifetime. I think because Union Catholic is such a close community, it really helps the students to develop great relationships with a variety of different people, from seniors to freshmen, and counselors to coaches! I know that I’ve met some incredible people here at UC. We’ve shared so many fun times together and we’ve become very close. We share good times and bad. We are friends that care about one another, but there are also times when we don’t always agree on things. And that’s the tough part. When we don’t agree, it’s inevitable that someone’s feelings are going to get hurt along the way. But the important thing is to try to be understanding of each other’s feelings. My mom says it’s all a part of being a teenager!

Well, with all of that said, I am SO ready for a (much needed) Spring Break!!!! I plan to take some time for myself and hang out with my friends. Luckily, I only got some work for one subject, AP Government and Politics. We’re a little behind schedule, and we have to fit everything in before we take the AP Test in May. That’s the good thing about taking an AP class – the tests are earlier, so you don’t have to come in to take a final in June! Anyway, I hope you all have a blessed Easter, and enjoy your vacation as much as I hope to enjoy mine. I’ll talk to you later!

Harvard and More!!!

Hi everyone! I thought I’d fill you in on what I’ve been up to these past few days. Thirteen members of our Forensics Team spent the past weekend in Boston at Harvard University. Students from all over the country were there. The competition was held on Saturday and Sunday, and 3 of our forensicators advanced into Monday's competitions. The Public Forum Debate team of sophomore John Cierpial and junior Angelo Cerimele made it to double-octafinals, which means they came in the top 32! Also, junior Adam Freeman made it to octafinals in JV Lincoln-Douglas Debate, placing in the top 16. Both of these categories had about 300 competitors, so their successes were really awesome. The team was so supportive of one another, and had a lot of fun too. We went out to dinner every night, and got time to shop around Harvard Square. We arrived home from Harvard on Monday night at about 6pm. As much fun and success as we had, we were all pretty eager to get back home and out of the long car ride! I had such a great time, not only with my teammates and coaches, but with actually competing and performing with my partner, Chris.

What else is new? Well, last week the junior class got to go to an assembly called "Making College Count." It was a very informative and realistic session given by a man who got a full scholarship and graduated first in both his business and regular school. He talked to us about narrowing down our college search, the correct way to go about the college admission process, and about seeking financial aid. It got us all thinking seriously about what colleges we want to go to.

On Saturday, I am auditioning for the dance program at The New Jersey Governor's School of the Arts. I was asked by one of my vice principals to send in an application, and I’ve made it to the next step which is to attend an audition this coming Saturday. They only accept 12 students into the program so this would be a great opportunity to me if I’m accepted into the program. I am sooo nervous. I'll be sure to tell you how it goes!

The Annual Freshman Lock-In is coming up!! I hope all of you who are now officially the Union Catholic Class of 2012 are planning to attend! The Lock-In is probably one of the most memorable activities here at UC. You not only get to meet more UC students, but you get to meet your entire high school class! It's such a fun night, filled with games, food, prizes, and more! Don't miss it!

OH WHAT A NIGHT!

Last Friday night was the 3rd Annual Accepted Students Dance – and oh, what a night it was! A lot of 8th graders came, and were greeted by many Big Brothers, Big Sisters, and Ambassadors of UC. I’ve been to the two past dances, and I think it’s gotten better and better with each year. More and more 8th graders came and were dancing the night away. I was surprised how fast a lot of them started to dance and make new friends. I talked to a lot of them throughout the night, especially the ones who didn’t know anyone. But by the end of the night, we got pretty much everyone out on the dance floor, making a congo line around the school and dancing to the Cha-Cha Slide and Cotton-Eyed Joe! I thought the night was really successful, and everyone there had a great time – 8th graders, UC students, and UC supervisors alike!

Catholic Schools Week is this week, and today and tomorrow we get two tag days! Today, everyone is wearing UC Apparel, from sweat pants to basketball jerseys. Tomorrow we can wear clothes from colleges. We also get complimentary “breakfast in the wings” in the morning.

The Student Council is selling candy grams for Valentine’s Day. A table is set up in the morning and anyone can buy something for their sweetheart for only a dollar!

We have another Forensics competition coming up this Saturday, with only one more in March! The team is working hard to do their very best and get points for nationals. The annual trip to Harvard is coming up too, on President’s Day weekend. I can’t wait!!

I also just realized how close the Spring Musical is, and the nerves are definitely kicking in! We only have 10 rehearsals until the big Tech Weekend, the weekend before opening night where the cast and crew basically live at school, running the show and working out any last minute problems.

Last Sunday, I got to come to school for “Q & A Sunday,” an Information Session for Accepted Students and their families. I gave a few tours and talked to several parents and kids, answering any questions that they had and telling them all about my life here at UC, just like I do on this blog! I love meeting so many different families, and I think it’s great that there are so many opportunities for you to come visit and learn more about our school. Learning all about UC before you even get here will make your transition into freshman year so much easier and fun!

"Any Dream Will Do"

Everyone that knows Mr. Luciano, Director of Recruitment here at UC, has probably heard him say the phrase, “Just livin’ the dream…” Since there are so many opportunities for students to succeed and enjoy themselves at Union Catholic, dreams really can come true!

If you’ve read my past blogs, you know that I’m a member of the Performing Arts Company and have been rehearsing for “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” Since we got back from Christmas break, practices have been heating up, with opening night less than two months away! (one of the songs from Joseph is called “Any Dream Will Do” – my “theme for this blog! J) Rehearsals can last from a minimum of two hours, to almost an entire day. This reality just shows how I’m livin’ my dream here at UC!

More dreams came true when the Boy’s Track Team won the title of Mountain Valley Conference Champions. Four of them have just qualified to compete at the Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden! You can read more about that in the Sophomore’s blog J

College acceptance letters are coming in, and seniors are realizing their dreams of attending the colleges of their choice. My friends and I are starting to seriously consider which colleges we see ourselves at too.

Our Forensics Team competed in our fourth league meet on Saturday, and the team came in third overall! Chris and I placed 2nd in Duo, Sophomore Arielle placed 1st in Declamation, Angelo and John placed 5th in Debate, and James and Keith placed 4th in Debate. When a “forensicator” receives enough points, they are eligible to compete at Nationals, which are held in Appleton, Wisconsin this year! We’re all crossing our fingers, with only 2 meets left!

In school this week, we’ll be reviewing for our Midterm Exams, which start on Friday. On Thursday, we get a “study day,” which is good because getting ready for midterms is always a little stressful. No daydreaming here!

It’s getting closer and closer to Registration Day for the Class of 2012. There are so many exciting things for the 8th graders to look forward to! I hope all of your dreams come true in being accepted to the high school you want. If you decide to come to UC, I know you’ll be happy that you did. Then you can become a part of the UC Community and live your dreams with all of us!

Walkin In A Winter Wonderland

With Christmas only 11 days away, the holiday spirit is certainly in the air, and at UC! Everyone looks forward to the month of December here. Our hallways are trimmed with lights and garland, Secret Santas are leaving presents in lockers, and the Key Club is collecting toys and coats for needy children. Last week, our Annual Tree of Lights Ceremony and the Christmas Concert took place. The Tree of Lights stands proudly in our main foyer, decorated with white doves that hold the names of loved ones who have passed away or need our special prayers. It’s a beautiful ceremony which gives us a chance to reflect on the beauty of the season, and to know that our school community bonds together in the most special times. The Christmas Concert gives students in our instrumental, vocal and dance classes an opportunity to showcase their talents and their hard work. Anyone who was able to attend the concert was treated to an array of songs of the season. The concert really puts you in the spirit!

Of course, we’re all anxiously awaiting the arrival of Christmas, but we’ve also been planning and anxiously waiting our Christmas Semi-Formal which finally arrived on Friday, December 7th. This year, the theme was a “Snow Ball.” Members of the student council, with the help of the Development Office and parent volunteers, arrived early on Thursday morning to transform our gym into a Winter Wonderland. They spent the day making food, setting up, hanging lights, trimming trees and putting the final touches on all the decorations for the big event. It’s tradition that before the Semi, many students get together at the homes of their friends for pictures and pre-Semi parties. And then it was off to the “Snow Ball!!” You could just feel the excitement in the air when we all arrived at school. The music was playing, everyone was dressed to impress, and everyone was happy to spend time with each other and dance the night away. It was a special night for me, and I’m sure for a lot of other people too. We all had a great time.

We had our Winter Pep Rally this morning to show support for our winter athletes and wish them a successful season. Our basketball, swimming, winter track and bowling teams were introduced, welcomed in by the UC cheerleaders. The cheerleaders cheered, and the Dance Cub danced. As a member of the Dance Club, I was so excited to perform in front of my whole school. The girls have all worked so hard, with two seniors choreographing and two seniors organizing and creating the outfits. It was so fun! But Sister Percy Lee and Mr. Reagan reminded us that we had to get back into “learning mode” for the rest of the day

The Forensics Team will be competing this Saturday at Ridge High School. Some of us recently traveled to Princeton University for the weekend to compete at their annual invitational meet. We had a successful weekend, gained some experience and had a great time too!

Rehearsals for “Joseph” are going strong. We’ve been rehearsing several times a week and things are starting to come together. I’m so excited for the play this year. I know it’s going to be great!

The weather report is predicting another storm this weekend – I’m dreaming of a White Christmas! I wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! I’ll be back with my next blog in 2008! Happy Holidays!!!

Happy Thanksgiving

I have so much more to tell you. The Fall Play was a great hit. I had so much fun performing in it, and it was so sad that it all had to be over in two nights. Sister Percy Lee said that next year we will try to make it two weekends, just like the Spring Musical is! I was really excited about that. So, as soon as the play was over, I was busy getting ready for “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” practices. It’s never a dull moment for me!

All of you who took the COOP Test should be at ease now. When the high school acceptance letters come out, its always an exciting time. Good luck to you all! There’s a lot of fun things in store for you here at UC -- the Accepted Student’s Dance, Registration Day, and our infamous Lock-In! As an ambassador and big sister, I hope to meet a lot of you at these events.

Today is our last day before Thanksgiving break. Sister gave us the today off tomorrow because of the success of all of the Fall Sports and the Fall Play! When we get back, we have the Honor Roll Breakfasts for all those who made first and second honors in the first marking period. Their families are all welcomed to attend a small ceremony and have refreshments in the cafeteria.

It's Showtime!!

Hey everyone - Sorry it’s been awhile since my last blog, but I’ve been really busy trying to balance my crazy schedule. Between play practice, forensics, schoolwork, homework, dance classes and my social life, my calendar is pretty full! But as stressful as the times may be, I have so much fun participating in all that I do here at UC. Let me fill you in on a few things --- First of all, our Forensics Team competed in our first regional competition on October 27. UC hosted it, so it was great to start the year off in our own school. A lot of new students joined the team this year and that helped boost our chances of “breaking” into finals. Two of our seniors, James Trollo and Keith Zukowski who competed in Public Forum Debate, placed 2nd; Allie D’Alusio, sophomore, placed 3rd in Declamation, and all three of our Duo Interpretation teams made it into final rounds with Alex Cortés and Steve Berger placing 6th, Angelo Cerimele and Arielle Gonzalez placing 4th, and my partner Chris Brown and I placing 2nd!!!!!! It was a great way to start off the year, but we’re all determined to improve as we go along. Our next meet is this Saturday – wish us luck!
A few days later, of course, it was Halloween, and the traditional Halloween Costume Contest was held at UC. We started the day off in the cafeteria where we were treated to donuts and juice. Then we paraded through the hallways before having to go to class. Prizes are awarded for the best costumes for individuals and groups. My friends and I dressed as “The Calendar Girls” and we were one of the groups to win the contest. The other group was “Noah’s Ark” – what a cool idea! Individual contest winners were Catwoman and Charlie Brown. It was a really fun day. Even some of the teachers dressed up and brought their children into school to join in on the fun.
Play practice has been taking up a lot of my spare time. Opening night is this Friday, November 9th at 8:00 p.m!! I hope you’ll come to see the show, The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940. It plays again on Saturday, November 10th at 8:00 p.m. I guarantee that you’ll be entertained! Everyone involved in the show has worked SO hard – the actors, the tech crew members, and especially Mr. and Mrs. Addison, the directors.
Auditions were held the other day for our spring musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Auditions are sooo nerve racking, for anyone! (even if you are a senior and doing this for 4th time). For auditions, you are required to sing and perform a monologue. It’s always a challenge deciding on what song to sing and what monologue to do. The callback list was posted (I got a callback!) and they will take place as soon as the fall play is over. No rest for the weary!!!
Let’s see… what else…. Oh, of course! Wednesday night was the Junior Ring Ceremony – and what a nice night it was. The junior class and their families gathered at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church across the street to celebrate in a mass. At the end, we each received our rings. I was ecstatic. Both the priest and Sister Percy Lee spoke of the significance of our ring, and of this milestone not only in our high school life, but our entire life as well. It was such a special ceremony. Afterwards, we all headed over to the UC cafeteria for refreshments, pictures, and ring-turning!! I’m not quite sure if I’ll get 2009 people to turn my ring… so I’ll aim for either 209 or 109. (haha).
One last event: the Junior Day of Recollection. The theme was “Reach for the Stars.” The days of recollection are run by the Peer Ministry Program. They are days in which each class gathers together, to build their relationships with one another, and to build their relationships with God. The peer ministers make it fun, with a lot of different games and activities. There are also speakers and group discussions. We are broken up into a number of groups, with 1 or 2 leaders to each group. In the groups, we discuss things about our faith and about the speeches we have heard from fellow students or teachers. Since it’s partly a religious event, many kids may think that it is boring, and some kids don’t even come to school on these days. But I love them – I think it’s a great way to get away from the stress of school and classes and to just be with your friends and focus your thoughts on God.
So, I see on the school calendar that this Friday is the date for the COOP test. For all of you 8th graders who may be reading this blog, I wish you luck! Don’t stress over it - it’s not as hard as you may think.
I know that this was a long blog, but SO MUCH has been going on here! I’ll try to keep you as updated as I can. Keep reading, and I’ll talk to you soon!

UC Goes to Boston!

Hey everyone! I have so much to tell you. It's been a busy week here at school, with the first club period on Monday, the Fall Pep Rally on Tuesday, and the PSAT Testing for
Sophomores and Juniors on Wednesday. I'll tell you all about that later, but first I need to fill you in on the Junior/Senior Trip!!

On Sunday night, at around 6:00pm, the three buses with UC students and chaperones returned home from a great weekend. I was so happy that I went, because I had an absolutely
amazing time with all of my friends and classmates. I'm definitely going to go on the trip next year, too!

Juniors, Seniors, and UC Faculty headed to Boston, Massachusetts after school on Thursday. We stopped and ate dinner at Dave and Buster's in the Palisades Mall in New York. I've
never been to a Dave and Buster's - it was so fun to go around and play whatever games we wanted after we ate. We finally arrived at our hotel at 11:00 that night. Rooms were
accomodated with 3 or 4 girls to a room, or 3 or 4 boys to a room. I barely unpacked that night because I was so tired and I knew that we had to get up early the next morning! On
Friday, we all ate breakfast together and then headed to Fenway Park. We got a special tour of the entire stadium. We even went on the Green Monster! Then we had some free time
to eat lunch and shop in downtown Boston. We got these lunch passes and could eat at any place that was on the pass. Later on, we had a dinner dance at our hotel. All the kids (and some of the faculty!) danced the night away. On Saturday, we took tours of Gloucester, Rockport, and Salem. Each bus had a tour guide with them, who gave us 3 cameras to take pictures with. We're all going to receive DVDs of our pictures! I can't wait to get it. (even though I took a million pictures of my own!) Sunday started a little solemn, only because none of us wanted to go home. We visited Boston College, went to mass there, and then headed on our way.

The entire weekend was a great way to bond with our friends. I definitely think it got me closer with my classmates, and even with the seniors on the trip too. Everyone got along and had a great time together.

Well, the week is finally over. I can't wait for the weekend so I can regroup and get myself back on track to finish off the marking period well!

Time Flies When You're Having Fun

Hey everyone! I can’t believe we’re into our third full week of school. It seems like everyone has settled into their classes and have gotten used to their schedules. Since my first blog, a lot has been happening here at UC. (of course!)

I’m happy to announce that I made the cast for our Fall Play!! Rehearsals have already begun. We meet 4 days a week after school until 5:30. It’s been a lot of fun so far, just getting familiar with the story line and all of our different roles. The set design is going to be very interesting, with revolving bookcases and secret passageways. Yes, the tech crew will certainly have their work cut out for them this time! It’s going to be a funny show, so I hope you’ll all come and see us! Mark your calendars for November 9th and 10th, at 8:00 p.m.

I forgot to tell you in my last blog that I’m a member of UCTV this year. In case you’re wondering, UCTV is our school’s very own television station where students themselves produce and carry out Union Catholic’s morning announcements and presentations. We also meet for class, in which we’re now learning about different filming techniques. There are only 7 of us, so it’s cool to work with a small group instead of being in a normal class with 25 people or so.

Our sports teams are doing great so far. I’ve had a chance to watch a little bit of the girls varsity volleyball team, and several of our varsity boys soccer team. It’s really great to see so many people coming out to cheer our athletes on. Whether we’re on the field or in the stands… we just can’t hide our Viking pride!! =)

The Freshmen received their laptops last week at Out-of-Box Night. As the newest members of the UC community, this is probably one of the most exciting nights of their freshmen year. Now they’ll really know what our motto “Anytime, Anywhere Learning” means - - it isn’t unusual to see UC students doing homework on the bus, in the bleachers, or just while their waiting after school.

The Welcome Back Dance was also last week. I couldn’t go this year, because of a friend’s birthday, but I talked to some other friends who went and they said they had a great time. It was surprising to hear that a lot of the senior class attended. They’re a great group and they have a lot of school spirit… you can tell at the Pep Rallys! I can’t wait until our next dance – the Winter/Christmas Semi-Formal!

This Tuesday, UC hosted an 8th Grade Day of Recollection where students from different grammar schools come to UC and participate in different activities and discuss certain issues. Ambassadors and Big Brothers and Big Sisters assisted in this event, acting as group leaders and speakers. I was one of four students who was asked to prepare a speech about self-acceptance. The three other speakers talked about friendship, building a relationship with God, and decision-making. After each speech, we gathered with our group of 8th graders and talked about those certain topics. The responses were great, and at the end of the day, it seemed like they all had a great time and hopefully learned a little bit more about themselves and our own students here at UC. I had fun too; it was a great experience to talk to the kids and help them with any problems or questions they had.

Mr. Luciano and our student Ambassadors have been very busy visiting grammar schools and attending High School Nights over the past few weeks. I had the opportunity to go with Mr. Luciano to my former school the other night. It was fun to see a lot of familiar faces and speak to parents and students about Union Catholic. Going back there made me realize just how fast high school is going by and how far I’ve come since 8th grade graduation!

Our OPEN HOUSE is next Tuesday night, October 2nd. I’ll see you there!

We're Back!!

Welcome back to school everyone! And welcome back to my blog! With the first full week of school off to a great start, I’m already prepared and excited to let you in on the “inside scoop” of Union Catholic, once again. I was very excited when asked to continue my blogging from last year; I’ll do my best to try to keep you posted on everything that I know goes on at UC!

The best part about the start of school is seeing all of your friends again, comparing schedules, and seeing who your teachers will be. As much as I hated summer vacation to be over, it really is nice to be back. I can’t believe I’m a junior already. It’s cool to be an “upper classman,” and to have a lot to look forward to this year. It’s also fun to see the new freshman class. Even though they’re all probably a little nervous, and may be having trouble finding their way around, the school community has surely welcomed them, and I’m sure it won’t be long until they feel right at home. The UC Big Brothers and Big Sisters were at their Orientation Day, offering friendly faces and loads of help. The motto of the BB/BS Program this year is “we all need somebody to lean on!”

As a junior, I was very happy and honored to be chosen as a Student Ambassador. My duties include attending many events at Union Catholic this year, as well as welcoming and informing students and their families about our school. Maybe I’ll have the chance to meet some of you who read this!

Yesterday afternoon, we attended Mass to celebrate the opening of school and to remember the victims of 9-11. The Peer Ministry Program did a great job of preparing for this mass, creating a large banner, and picking the readings and songs. Because the theme for our school year is “you are the light of the world,” we sang songs such as “This Little Light of Mine,” “Christ, Be Our Light,” and “Go Light Your World.”

The fall sports season is already in full swing. Because of the rain yesterday, a lot of the games were canceled, but the girl’s volleyball team, who played at home, won their first game! Many kids from school stayed and cheered them on, and the gym was filled with a lot of UC Spirit. After school today, I plan on auditioning for the Fall Play. Next week, the freshman will get their laptops at “Out of Box Night,” and our Welcome Back Dance is next Friday. I can’t wait!

Well, as you can see, there’s never a dull moment at UC. I’ll be back soon to keep you posted!

End of Year

It’s hard to believe that it’s the final week of school, and that we’re taking our final exams this week!! As I look back on my sophomore year, it seems like it flew by so quickly, even though I had plenty of things to do, and had a lot going on in my life! The end of the year is always an exciting time. The Sports, PAC, and Academic Awards all took place, and were enjoyed by both the students and their families. It’s so nice to see so many students get recognized for their achievements throughout the school year. At the PAC Awards, the Fall and Spring Shows for next year were announced. The Fall Play will be The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940, and the Spring Musical will be Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat!!! Everyone has already been talking about these shows, anxious to see how we’ll pull them off next year… the set for the fall play is said to be HUGE! I can’t wait.
Over Memorial Day Weekend, I joined the Forensics Team as they flew off to Nationals in Houston, Texas, and boy was it a fun time! =) A total of 8 “forensicators” went this year… a big number compared to past years! Myself and another sophomore competed in Declamation, and he advanced to the quarter-finals. Then, 3 senior teams of 2 competed in Duo Interpretation and Public Forum. The PF team advanced to the double-octo-finals, and one of the duo teams went all the way to the semi-finals!! That means that they were the top 12 of the entire country. The Archdiocese of Newark (which Union Catholic is a part of) also placed in the top 5. So, it was a really successful, and fun weekend. I’m going to miss the seniors soooo much!
Freshman, sophomores and juniors went on the annual Great Adventure trip last Tuesday. Since the seniors went a week before, it was the underclassmen’s turn. Even though there were some scattered raindrops, the entire day was really great.
Two weeks ago, it came time for the seniors’ last day of school. It was really sad to say goodbye to them; we’ve become friends with so many, whether because they were involved in the same activities that we are, or just because we’ve met them in the hallway a few times. It’s become a sort of tradition now that they all sign each other’s polo’s in permanent markers. Since the senior courtyard is no longer theirs, the juniors received their “right of passage” this past Friday. In the morning there was a small ceremony, and then they were treated to a delicious breakfast. It’s hard to believe that will be me next year!!!!
Even though school is just about over, I’ll be spending several nights here in the UC auditorium taking voice and acting lessons with PAC, and rehearsing for our summer show, Merrily We Roll Along. Auditions for the summer show were held about a month ago, and rehearsals begin in just a few short weeks. Besides PAC, many of our athletic teams have summer camps and practices, so as you can see, there’s never a dull moment at Union Catholic.
I’m going to miss seeing my friends every day, but I’m planning to spend time with many of them over the summer. I hope you all have a wonderful summer… stay relaxed, and refreshed! And remember that UC will always be welcoming you, with friendly faces and loads to offer. Have fun at the barbeque, class of 2011!!

Spring Pep Rally

The 2007 Spring Pep Rally was held on Tuesday. We have a “PM Schedule” that we follow, with slightly shortened periods so that we can fit the pep rally into the end of the day. It started at 1:00. All the Spring Sports walk through the blue and white doors and balloon archway, with the rest of the school roaring and cheering for them. The players must feel really great, with the whole school’s attention on them. After all the teams walk across the gym, the National Anthem is sung. After that, fun activities are underway. Students and teachers sign up to play different activities, like mini-golf put-put, and class vs. class tug of war. It’s fun to watch the teachers play games and things. The whole school gets really into it. The four different classes chant their class year, to see who has the most school spirit. In between games, the cheerleaders, step squad, and dance club perform. For some reason, I was really nervous for dance club this time. But we ended up doing a great job, and we got a lot of compliments after. I love pep rallies! I think they really sum up what UC is all about – coming together as a school (students, teachers, sports teams, clubs) and showing our Viking pride!

Hello Everyone!!

It’s been a week since we got back to school from Spring Break. It was a very relaxing one for me; thank goodness I didn’t have much homework. Since the weather was so cold, it was easier to return to school after a long break. We started things off by attending the Honor Roll Breakfast for the third marking period. All the students and their families met in the cafeteria, where Sr. Percy Lee and our assistant principals and guidance counselors announced all the names and expressed their congratulations, and then we were treated to a breakfast. It was a nice way to start off the week.

The Spring Pep Rally is tomorrow. In addition to all the other spring sports (track, baseball, softball, tennis, and golf) UC’s new spring sport, girls lacrosse, will be ‘walking’ in the pep rally. A lot of the girls got together and wanted to form a team, and some of our teachers agreed to be the coaches. The girls are really excited. If you ever want to go see one of our sporting events – see a schedule on our website! Now that the weather is getting nicer, it’s a great way to spend an afternoon with your friends. The dance club will be performing at the Pep Rally too. The girls and I have been rehearsing and we’re excited to be dancing again. I’ve been told that everyone always looks forward to seeing the dance club perform!

The Annual Mr. UC Pageant is Thursday night at 7pm in the auditorium. A number of senior boys are in this pageant, and the audience gets to help pick the winner. It’s really a fun and entertaining night! Also, before the pageant, SMAC (Student Movement against Cancer) is hosting their “Quarter-Dip” night to raise funds for the fight against cancer. This is when members of SMAC provide all sorts of food for a quarter per serving. It’s a fun night and a great way to raise money for a very worthy cause.

This Friday night is the Junior Prom. It’s from 8pm – 12am at Berkeley Plaza. Some of my girlfriends in the sophomore class are going. They are sooo excited!! I know that the juniors have been looking forward to this night for a long time. I’m sure everyone will have a great time.

* OPEN HOUSE – TOMORROW, TUESDAY APRIL 24th at 7:00pm! I’ve been talking all about my school; here’s your chance to come and experience it for yourself! It’s never too early to start looking at high schools. This open house gives you a “sneak peek” at what UC is all about, but you should still plan on coming to our Open House next Fall.

I know how exciting this time of year must be for eighth graders who are preparing for graduation. Good Luck!! And if you’re coming to UC next year, make sure to attend the Freshman BBQ. It’s a lot of fun, and you to get to meet many people – not just members in your new class, but some UC students too!

Sugar...at the Parade and on the UC Stage!

Hi Everyone!
I’m sitting here in my study hall and decided to write my new blog. There’s a lot to talk about! On Saturday, March 10th, Union Catholic participated in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Union. The Performing Arts Company performed a number from our Spring Musical, “Sugar.” There were a lot of people watching and they seemed to enjoy it. It was so exciting and so much fun to be a part of such a great day. Before the parade began, the UC students were treated to hot chocolate and sandwiches by the ladies in the Development Office, Mrs. Abel, Mrs. Palenik, Miss LaCorte and Mrs. Thornton, the Director of Admissions. Many UC students and our school mascot marched with pride, as Union Catholic was the first school in line to march in the parade. Everyone was very impressed with our school; we marched in our school uniforms and wore sashes to show off our Viking Pride! It was a perfect day for a parade; we all had so much fun.

The 3rd marking period will end on March 23rd. I can’t believe how fast this year has gone by. It is now time for all of us to make our course selections for next year. We register for next years classes online. Because I’ll be a junior next year, I can choose an elective; I still haven’t made my final decision. We were told to hurry fast, since classes fill up quickly.

Well, like I’ve been mentioning all throughout my blogs, our Spring Musical, “Sugar,” has finally arrived! This Friday is OPENING NIGHT! Please come and see the show; you’ll absolutely love it! Check the website’s main page for the dates and times. We are also performing the show this Wednesday and next Wednesday too, for the grade schools that are coming.

Also, I’ve been talking about our Forensics Team throughout my previous blogs. The regular season is now finished, as our final competition was cancelled because of the snow and ice this past Saturday. The Union Catholic Forensics Team ended the regular season in Third Place! Some of us at Union Catholic will be competing at Nationals in Houston, Texas over the Memorial Day weekend. Four UC seniors will be competing in Duo Interpretation, two will be competing in Public Forum, and two of us (including myself) will be competing in Declamation. I’m very excited about this and looking forward to traveling to Texas with my teammates and coaches.

Progress Reports...Career Day

Hey Everyone! Just figured I’d write a little about what’s been going on lately, and what’s coming up for the weekend! Everyone waited in anticipation for progress reports to arrive home this past Friday. The few days before it comes is always a little stressful. Usually, you’ll know how you’re doing in your classes, but for some it can still be nerve-racking, especially because they know that their plans for the weekend might have to be altered if they do poorly! Progress reports always have to come on a Friday… I never liked that. But I was relieved; thankfully, mine wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be!

On Thursday, the sophomore class has Career Day. In homeroom yesterday, we had to pick several fields that interest us from a list of careers. Career Day is when UC Alumni volunteer to come into school and talk about their job and how they got there. I’m excited for it, because I’m still not sure what I want to do when I get older! It’ll be great to hear from people who went from being a high school student at UC to having successful jobs in the real world!

I know that Friday is the Class of 2011 Lock-In!! I hope you all have a blast; I remember I did! The Lock-In is where I started to get to know and talk to a lot more kids from my class. I still remember who I met at the Lock-In; some of those people are my greatest friends now! There are plenty of fun games and activities prepared for you; along with a lot of food and snacks. Enjoy yourself; it will certainly be a great memory to look back on!

On Saturday, Union Catholic will be marching in the Union County Saint Patrick’s Day Parade in Union. The Performing Arts Company will be performing something from our upcoming musical, (OPENING NIGHT – MARCH 23rd!), and many members from the school community will be marching together. This year, UC was picked to carry the banners for each of the counties in Ireland! It’s very exciting =) A lot of UC students will also be marching in the parade, showing our school spirit and Viking pride! We’re going to ‘tailgate’ and have breakfast in the morning. It should be a fun day!

UC Forensics goes to Harvard

Hey Everyone! I just wanted to take the time to write a short blog about the Forensics Harvard trip this past weekend. Leaving for the five hour drive at 9:30 on Friday morning, I never knew how much fun it would be!!

We took a rest stop somewhere in Connecticut, and finally got into Boston by 4:00. We had the whole night to relax in the hotel, and prepare for the competition the next day. We assembled together as a team and went out to dinner, where I had a delicious bowl of New England clam chowder soup J. (it’s my favorite!) Then, we all practiced reciting our speeches and presenting our debates in front of our four coaches. Lights had to be out at 11:30, for we had a long day ahead of us! Saturday, we headed on the “T” and arrived at the Harvard campus. We competed in three rounds that day, and our last round was on Sunday morning. Sunday afternoon, we found out that our senior boys duo made it into the octave-finals. We all went and watched them compete. Then, we had some time to go back and relax at the hotel. Some shopped at the gift shop, while others got Starbucks in the lobby.

The competition at Harvard was huge. There were about 200 participants in each category. Just having the experience to travel to such a university and compete with students from all around the country is really amazing. And of course, the team had a great time together. On the way home on Monday morning, almost everyone was sleeping. It was a very long, but fun weekend!

As for the rest of the forensics year, there is only one more competition, on March 17. Union Catholic is hosting it. At this meet, the participants for Nationals will be announced, as well as the winning teams for the year.

Snow days and more =)

Hey everybody. Tomorrow is Valentine's Day and I’m sitting here with my pajamas on inside out, hoping for a snow day. Even though tommorw is Valentine’s Day, it would be great to have a day off. If we do have a day off, however, UC will celebrate Valentine’s Day on Thursday, so that’s good =). The Student Council has been selling candy grams for anyone who wishes to send one to someone they admire. They also were sponsoring a Compatibility Test, where you had to fill out a questionnaire, and then get to see your results on Valentine’s Day. I thought that was a pretty cute thing to do. Can’t wait to see the results – should be interesting, haha.

Anyway, the Forensics Team is preparing to compete at Harvard University in Boston, Massachusetts this weekend. I’ll be competing in duo, with my friend who is a senior. Harvard is the biggest and probably our most favorite competition of the year. There will be students from all over the country competing. At our last league meet, we were very successful, and came in third place once again. It looks like some of us may be going to Nationals in Houston, Texas!! Wish us luck =)

This Friday night, the Italian Club is sponsoring Carnivale, a night of great food, entertainment, and fun. Its always a night to look forward to every year.

Hello Everyone! It’s been awhile. I’ve been caught up in so many things lately, and I haven’t written since before Christmas! But now I am back, with lots of things to talk about.

Just last weekend, I attended the Class of 2011 Accepted Students Dance here at UC. I am a member of the Big Brother/Big Sister program and many of us were asked to be at the dance to help make the Class of 2011 feel welcomed. It was great to meet a lot of the incoming freshman, and to welcome them into our school family! By the end of the night, almost everyone was dancing, and it seemed like everyone was having a great time. Tomorrow is registration day. Congratulations to everyone who got into UC; I know that you will absolutely love it here! There are lots of exciting things ahead for you (like the Class of 11’ Lock-In and the Freshman B-B-Q which takes place in June!) It seems like only yesterday when I was beginning my journey here at UC and I have to say, it’s been a great experience so far. Take my advice, time goes by quickly in high school, so don’t miss out on all the fun that awaits you!

Because it is Catholic Schools Week, UC had two Spirit Days. Yesterday, the entire school community wore Big Blue and White UC Apparel. It was great to see so many people showing their Viking pride! And today is Wild and Wacky Day. We get to dress up with crazy clothes, socks, shoes, and hats! Even though I was wishing for a snow day today, its always fun to see what kind of outfits everyone has on.

Practices for the spring musical have been underway. The show is starting to come together, little by little. Even though it gets tiring coming to school on week nights from 6-9, I know that it will be worth it in the end. I hope you will come to see the show. Bring your friends too!

Christmas Time!

Hello all! It’s been a while since my last blog. I’m sure most of you can agree when I say that this is a very busy time of year! Since my last blog, the Forensics Team traveled to Princeton University for an invitational meet the first weekend in December, and we’re preparing now for our 3rd League meet this Saturday at Ridge H.S. Last Tuesday, our school held our annual Christmas Concert and Tree of Lights Ceremony. The school choir, band, and dance class all performed various pieces that brought Christmas spirit into our school community. The Tree of Lights is a very special ceremony in which families can gather and remember lost loved ones whose names are placed on white dove ornaments and hung on our beautiful tree in the main foyer. This year, our tree was dedicated to the memory of Chris Obara, a UC student who passed away in September from cancer. It was truly an emotional, but heartfelt evening.

Our Christmas Semi-Formal was held on Friday night in our newly renovated gymnasium. About 550 students attended. The gym was decorated with pretty lights, Christmas trees, and poinsettias. It was a very magical night for everyone, and one that I myself, will never forget!

Our winter pep rally was Wednesday, December 13th. Pep rally days are so much fun! =)

Sophomore Day of Recollection

Hello Everyone! Last Wednesday, we had our Sophomore Day of Recollection. The theme was “Finding Your Path.” Peer Ministry decorated our hallway, and they ran the day for us. We played games, listened to speakers, and had group discussions. Mrs. Caffrey, one of the teachers here, spoke about always choosing love. She said that “if we choose love, we choose God, and if we choose God, we choose love.” Then, two of the senior Peer Ministers spoke to us. They both spoke about how their ‘journeys through life’ had been altered, due to serious situations, and how they got back onto the right path. It was so interesting and touching to hear them speak.

I could tell that all the sophomores enjoyed the day. Besides getting out of classes for one day, we all got to learn a little bit more about our fellow classmates, and even a little bit more about ourselves. The day ended with a mass at the church across the street, in which several of our classmates participated in. The priest gave a homily with a powerful message, telling us that staying on the right path is essential to living a full and happy life.

At the end of the day today, we will have our Thanksgiving Liturgy. Classes will probably be busy today, because we will need to get a lot of work done before we leave for Thanksgiving Break! I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving!!

I passed my drivers test!

Hello everyone!

Well, of course, I have a lot of things to talk about. The Sophomore Olympics last week turned out to be a blast! I had so much fun, and my homeroom got 2nd place! We participated in activities like volleyball, 3-legged-races, and basketball tosses. Then, the second portion was the ‘academic’ part. 3 representatives from each homeroom (I was one of them!) had to go up and answer questions together that ranged in topics from math to sports, and science to entertainment! It was a really great day for our class to come together as a whole and have fun.

I found out that I passed my driver’s test!! I am SOOO excited, although my mom and dad would not have cared if I failed it a few times! I guess they’re not ready for me to start driving!!

On Friday, some of us in the Big Brother/Big Sister Program were asked to help out at the Co-Op Test. Even though I had to get up really early and get dressed in uniform, it was nice to see all the 8th graders and to make them feel welcomed and comfortable at our school. They all seemed anxious to take the test, and a lot of them said it was pretty easy. There are many more things planned for the Class of 2011 at UC. In case anyone’s still undecided about what high school they want to go to, they should really come for Freshman for a Day. It’s a great way to see our school and the freshman classes. Make sure you try our UC fries!!!

The Forensics Team competed again on Saturday. UC came in 3rd place again! =) and I received 3rd place in my category as well.

The big events for me for this coming week are the play auditions and the Sophomore Day of Recollection. I’ve been memorizing my lines and practicing my song, so I feel pretty prepared. I’m still very nervous though! I hear that there are a lot of new members trying out; it should be interesting! Wish me luck! I’ll tell you all about it in my next blog. Have a great week!

Exciting Week Ahead!

Halloween last week was so much fun. It was great to see all the creative costumes that people dressed up in. After having breakfast in the cafeteria, everyone paraded around the whole school. The contest for the best decorated wing was very close; the senior wing won, but I think our sophomore wing was the best! I went to see our fall play, Rumors, on Friday and Saturday night. I laughed so hard and so did everyone else. By far, this was the best play I’ve seen at UC!!! If you didn’t see it, you really missed out!!!

Tomorrow there’s no school because of Election Day. Wednesday is a Tag Day (woo hoo!) and I’m taking my drivers test that day too. Sophomore Olympics are this Thursday. All the sophomores have been looking forward to this day for weeks. I’m not really sure what to expect, but I think that all the sophomore homerooms will compete in various activities to prove victorious, and basically to have ‘bragging rights’ for the rest of the year. It’s a fun day when we can all be with our friends and maybe even get to know some of our other classmates even better. To close off the week, there’s no school on Friday because of the Co-Op Test for 8th graders. I can still remember when I took the test and how nervous we all were. But it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be, so for all of you 8th graders who may be reading this blog, “Good Luck” and “Don’t Be Nervous!” There’s another Forensics Competition on Saturday. Hopefully we’ll continue our success! I’ve got a feeling it’s going to be a great week! =)

For anyone interested, the First Annual UC American Idol contest sponsored by the Student Council and SMAC (“Student Movement Against Cancer”) is scheduled for Thursday, November 16. Four UC students from each grade will be participating. This should be something to see!!!!

"Rumors" and Halloween

I can’t believe how fast this past week has gone for me. Since its getting near the end of the first marking period, it seems like I’ve had a lot of extra homework which has kept me pretty busy. Also, I’ve stayed after school practically every day, either practicing with the Dance Club, or practicing for our first Forensics League meet which was held this Saturday.

The Dance Club is off to a great start. About 40 girls joined this year! We’re all working hard to learn the choreography for the winter pep rally, and having lots of fun while doing so. The Forensics Team has also had a big leap in new members this year. At the first league meet this Saturday, UC placed 3rd! Many solo and duo competitors “broke” into the final rounds and received trophies for placing. It was a very exciting day.

The Junior Ring Ceremony was held this past Tuesday Night. At the event, the Class of 08, along with their family members and friends, celebrated mass together and received their class rings. On Wednesday, the juniors had a “Dress Up Day” to show off their rings. It’s hard to believe that in just a few months I’ll be ordering my own class ring! I can’t hardly wait!!!

The Fall Play this year is “Rumors,” by Neil Simon. From what I hear, it’s a great show filled with lots of laughs. I know many of the cast and crew members who have been working really hard over the past several weeks to make the show a huge success. I can’t wait to see it! I definitely recommend that you see it too. Come on either Friday or Saturday night; bring your friends. Show time is at 8:00 pm!!

I guess the best part of this week will be Halloween. (Oh yea – and a ½ day on Friday!!) We’re allowed to wear costumes on Tuesday, and everyone gathers in the cafeteria for breakfast. My friends and I are dressing up in a group; it should be a fun day! I hear that some of the teachers are dressing up this year too. I’ll fill you in on all the details next week!

Hello, my name is Jeanette, and I am a sophomore here at Union Catholic High School. I am in the Distinguished Scholars Program, taking accelerated and honor level classes. I was so excited when Mrs. Thornton asked my friend, James, and I to be the “student bloggers” here on the website! I think it’s a great idea for those kids looking to apply to Union Catholic to get a real feel for what it is like to be a student at UC.

This blog will be a place for me to tell you about my life inside (and maybe outside!) UC. I will write an entry every Monday or so, and talk about the events that took place the week before. Since this is my first entry, I won’t get into too much =). I can’t believe how fast the school year has gone by already; it seems like yesterday when I was meeting my “little sisters” of the class of 2010 on their Orientation Day, and going to the Sophomore Orientation Day myself!

In case you were wondering, the clubs and activities that I participate in at UC are, PAC (the Performing Arts Company), Forensics (The Speech and Debate Team), the Dance Club, SMAC (Student Movement Against Cancer), the Environmental Club, and, of course, the Blue Crew! All of those things can keep me pretty busy. I love them all though, and I’ve met so many new friends because of them. Just a couple of weekends ago, a few of the Forensics Team members and I, along with our coaches, traveled to the University of Pennsylvania to participate in an invitational meet. I wound up getting 2^nd place in my category! I was so happy, because I had practiced really hard. The team, as always, had a great time. Our first tournament of the season is this Saturday. Many new students have joined the team and have been practicing daily. We’re hoping to have a great season of competition! Two weeks ago we had our Fall Pep Rally! I love the Pep Rallies; it is so fun to come together as the entire school community in the gym and to have so much school spirit in one place! I’ve also been preparing to audition for the Spring Musical – “Sugar.”

Well, this is getting a little long… I am sure that I will have much more to talk about as the school year progresses! Stay tuned; I’m sure that you will love to read more!
